Indian Railways Endorses Kavach Expansion Projects

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Railways has announced the approval of projects worth Rs 341 crore aimed at extending the Kavach system in the Ambala Division of Northern Railway and the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway. This extensive rollout is intended to introduce the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) technology to several high-traffic passenger and freight routes, encompassing a total distance of 1,409 route kilometres. The initiative aligns with the Railways’ ongoing commitment to enhancing train safety, mitigating collision risks, and bolstering operational efficiency along vital transit corridors.

Ambala Division Project to Cover 811 Km

The more extensive project, approved at a cost of Rs 201 crore, will span 811 route kilometres within the Ambala Division. Key sections involved include Ambala Cantonment–Ludhiana, Kalka–Chandigarh–New Morinda–Sahnewal, Sirhind–Daulatpur Chowk, Rajpura–Bathinda–Shri Ganganagar, and Ludhiana–Dhuri–Jakhal. These routes connect the states of Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh and are known for handling significant volumes of passenger and freight traffic.

This substantial undertaking aims to improve safety and efficiency along some of the busiest railway lines in the region. By implementing the Kavach system across these critical segments, the Railways expects to enhance overall operational reliability and safeguard against unplanned incidents.

Ahmedabad Division to Receive Comprehensive Kavach Coverage

In the Ahmedabad Division, Indian Railways has sanctioned a Rs 140 crore project for the installation of Kavach Version 4.0. This initiative will cover 598 route kilometres across 48 block sections. Prior to this approval, approximately 702 route kilometres had already been designated for Kavach implementation in the division. The latest approval will ensure that all remaining sections are integrated into this safety framework, thereby promoting a comprehensive deployment of the system across the Ahmedabad Division.

The expansion across both the Ambala and Ahmedabad Divisions represents a significant move towards fortifying railway safety measures. With a focus on enhancing the coverage of the Kavach system, the Railways aims to implement a uniform standard of safety across more extensive stretches of its network.

As part of the broader efforts to bolster railway safety, the Kavach system functions to minimise risks associated with train operations. Its development reinforces the Indian Railways’ mission to modernise its infrastructure while addressing safety concerns in a proactive manner.

How the Kavach System Enhances Safety

Kavach, a Made-in-India Automatic Train Protection system, is designed to significantly improve railway safety. Its functionalities include preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applying brakes in precarious situations, monitoring train speed during critical phases, and lowering the chances of train collisions. The system employs an LTE-based communication network for effective operation, ensuring that trains operate more safely across high-density transit areas.

With the continued expansion of the Kavach system, Indian Railways seeks to address safety concerns comprehensively, particularly in regions with high passenger and freight traffic. This investment is expected to yield long-term benefits for the safety and efficiency of train operations throughout the nation.

The rollout of these projects signifies a critical advancement in the Railway’s safety protocols and demonstrates an ongoing commitment to technological innovation in train operations. As these projects move forward, the emphasis remains on creating a safer and more reliable railway network for all passengers and freight operators across India.
