India will host the foreign ministers from the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) nations on May 26, marking a significant diplomatic event aimed at enhancing security and development strategies in the Indo-Pacific region. The meeting has been convened at the invitation of India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar, and will bring together leaders from Australia, Japan, and the United States.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio are expected to participate in this high-level diplomatic meeting. The foreign ministers will focus on reinforcing alliances and addressing various regional issues, aligning with common strategic interests.

This summit is anticipated to follow up on discussions from their previous meeting held in Washington, D.C., on July 1, 2025. It will be instrumental in reinforcing commitments to a free and open Indo-Pacific, as well as reaffirming collective efforts towards maritime security and upholding international norms.

In a recent statement, officials highlighted that the summit aims to reinforce the Quad’s vision for a collaborative Indo-Pacific. This vision encompasses shared objectives and priorities among the participating nations, thus aiming for a harmonious and stable regional environment.

Anticipated Bilateral Engagements

During their stay in New Delhi, the foreign ministers are expected to engage in individual meetings with Dr Jaishankar, as well as discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These one-on-one interactions are crucial for fostering bilateral relationships and enhancing cooperation in strategically significant areas.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that energy cooperation will be a major theme of his discussions with Indian leaders. He emphasised that deepening ties in energy-related initiatives is a priority, affirming that the strategic partnership between the United States and India will be a focal point of the visit.

In his remarks, Rubio acknowledged the longstanding partnership between the two democracies and expressed optimism regarding future collaborations. He noted the significance of the Quad and the importance of maintaining dialogue to strengthen these ties further.

This upcoming meeting in New Delhi serves not only as a continuation of prior engagements between Quad nations but also as a platform to address current global and regional challenges collectively.
