Morocco has announced it is reinforcing security measures along its border with Spain as social media platforms witness renewed calls for mass crossings into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. This development follows concerns over a potential repeat of the significant migrant surge experienced in late July 2026, which saw tens of thousands attempt to breach the border.

The Spanish Civil Guard has confirmed that the border remains closed, with Defence Minister Margarita Robles explicitly warning against any new attempts at mass entry into Ceuta, as well as the adjacent Melilla. The calls for crossings, reportedly circulated in Moroccan social media groups, propose a new attempt on Saturday; however, their origin remains unclear.

July Surge and Its Aftermath

In July, approximately 72,000 migrants managed to swim or climb over the border into Ceuta, driven primarily by economic difficulties and unfounded online claims that the border was open. Following the incident, nearly all migrants returned to Morocco, but the event had significant political implications throughout Europe. Official records state that at least 80 individuals lost their lives during this attempt, with human rights organisations estimating the actual figure could be higher.

Authorities are also witnessing an increase in calls for crossings into Melilla, another Spanish autonomous city situated on North Africa’s coast. The presence of Ceuta and Melilla marks the only land borders between the European Union and the African continent.

In response to these developments, Morocco’s Interior Ministry asserted that appropriate actions have been instituted to prevent any new illegal crossings. The ministry indicated that heightened monitoring is part of an ongoing vigilance strategy, particularly in areas surrounding the Ceuta and Melilla crossings.

Increased Military Presence and Arrests

Although the Interior Ministry did not disclose specifics regarding the number of personnel deployed or the type of equipment being used, reports have emerged of extensive police presence. Videos circulating on social media show hundreds of officers equipped with riot gear, alongside water cannons and ambulances. Local news outlet Hespress has also indicated that tear gas and stun grenade deployment equipment has been positioned at the border.

A senior Moroccan diplomat, speaking anonymously, stated that over 20,000 security personnel are stationed daily along the Ceuta border, at a substantial financial cost. The diplomat noted that this figure reflects the Moroccan government’s commitment to maintaining order and security in the region.

In addition to reinforcing physical security measures, Moroccan authorities have reportedly detained and are investigating individuals suspected of inciting crossing attempts, although additional details have not been made available. Defence Minister Robles, during her visit to Ceuta, emphasised the collective responsibility to address those orchestrating such movements, including through social media channels.

Spain’s Response to the Border Situation

The Spanish Civil Guard has proactively responded to the situation by releasing messages on social media, aimed at discouraging potential migrants. Their communication emphasised that the border with Spain is not open and warned that new containment barriers have been established. The message cautioned would-be crossers that any attempts to breach the barriers would result in immediate return.

The containment barriers were installed promptly following the July 31 incidents. Both Morocco and Spain have adopted stringent measures to avert a recurrence of the migrant surge into Ceuta and to deter similar attempts in Melilla, prioritising regional stability and security.
