Prajwal Revanna, a former Member of Parliament from the Janata Dal (Secular), was found in possession of an Android mobile phone during a raid by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison on Tuesday. The raid was executed as part of a wider operation targeting high-profile inmates, according to Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Alok Kumar.

The raid took place on August 12, 2026, and lasted approximately four to five hours. Kumar mentioned that the operation was focused on several high-profile prisoners, during which the phone allegedly belonging to Revanna was seized. The CCB has been actively investigating illegal items within the prison environment.

In addition to Revanna, another inmate named Prathap Rai was also found with a mobile phone. This incident has led to a case being registered against both individuals under Section 42 of the Prisons Act, which stipulates penalties for possessing prohibited items inside the facility or communicating with other prisoners unlawfully.

Authorities Investigate Prison Security Breach

Following the raid, prison authorities are scrutinising CCTV footage and gathering additional information to evaluate the situation further. Alok Kumar stated that notices will be served to those involved as part of the investigation, with actions anticipated based on the findings.

An Assistant Superintendent has been placed under suspension in light of the report from the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of South, and a show-cause notice has been issued to the Superintendent of Bengaluru Central Prison. Kumar expressed that the investigation would be thorough to assess the implications of the security breach.

Despite the incident involving the mobile phones, Kumar confirmed that no other contraband items were uncovered during the search operation. This raises concerns regarding the overall security protocols in place at the prison, particularly concerning high-profile inmates.

Prajwal Revanna’s Ongoing Legal Troubles

Prajwal Revanna has been incarcerated following a conviction for rape, which occurred in a case involving a house-help at a farmhouse in Holenarasipura, located in the Hassan district. He was sentenced in August 2025 by a Special Court for People’s Representatives to life imprisonment and fined Rs 10 lakh, with Rs 7 lakh allotted to the survivor as compensation.

As of now, Revanna is facing additional legal challenges, with three more rape cases pending trial. His connection to prominent political figures, including being the grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, has placed him in the public eye, thereby adding scrutiny to his legal battles.

The situation surrounding Revanna’s case has garnered significant media attention, making it imperative for authorities to ensure stringent measures are upheld to maintain prison discipline and security.
