India Joins 35-Country US-Led Drive for Trusted AI Supply Chains

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has officially joined a collaborative initiative with thirty-four other nations, led by the United States, aimed at establishing reliable and resilient supply chains for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This significant announcement was made during the second Pax Silica Summit, which took place in Washington on Thursday.

Jacob Helberg, the US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, confirmed that the thirty-five countries signed a Joint Statement on AI Opportunity. This statement endorses a regulatory framework that fosters both growth and innovation in the context of AI development.

Helberg highlighted that the initiative is centred around a commitment to trusted supply chains, the mobilisation of the private sector, and the establishment of necessary infrastructure to drive advancements in the coming century.

Participating Nations and Indian Representation

The Pax Silica initiative saw participation from diverse countries, including Argentina, Germany, the Netherlands, Chile, Costa Rica, Greece, Kazakhstan, and Panama, alongside the European Union. Each of these nations aims to contribute to the vision of a reliable AI landscape.

India’s participation is represented by S Krishnan, Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and Nagraj Naidu, Additional Secretary (Americas) in the Ministry of External Affairs. Along with these officials, representatives from Indian industry were present, facilitating discussions regarding collaboration in semiconductors, AI, and resilient technology supply chains.

These discussions were aimed at identifying avenues for further collaboration among the countries involved, stressing the importance of developing a robust framework for AI technology that would benefit all members.

Goals and Future Aspirations

Helberg articulated that the future of artificial intelligence will not be defined by who regulates the technology first, but rather by who builds the infrastructure and capacity needed for its advancement. He noted the importance of enhancing energy, computational power, and talent to boost innovation and economic growth.

He also expressed the collective aspiration of the participating nations to construct an AI future that serves the wider population, fortifying economies and encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation while upholding the rule of law.

The initiative, which began in December of the previous year with a limited number of countries, witnessed India’s accession in February during the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi. This week’s summit marked a pivotal expansion, bringing the total number of countries aligned with the Pax Silica initiative to thirty-five, affirming a unified commitment towards developing reliable AI supply chains.
