The Defence Ministry of India has announced a significant step in modernising its aerial capabilities by issuing a tender worth approximately Rs 1 lakh crore for the acquisition of 60 multirole transport aircraft. This tender was made public on August 12, in New Delhi, amidst ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the ageing fleet of cargo planes currently utilised by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

This procurement initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency and bolster national security. It highlights the commitment of the Ministry to ensure that Indian companies play a central role in the programme. Defence officials stated that multiple stakeholders from the Indian defence sector would be involved in this venture.

Leading Indian Companies in Competition

Several prominent Indian firms are vying for this lucrative contract, notably Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Tata, and Mahindra. Mahindra Defence has partnered with Embraer, a Brazilian aerospace corporation, to propose the C-390 transport aircraft. Meanwhile, Tata is collaborating with Lockheed Martin to offer the C-130 aircraft, which is already operational within the IAF for special operations.

This collaboration between Indian firms and established international manufacturers is aimed at fostering domestic production capabilities. It is anticipated that around 20 per cent of the initial batch of aircraft will be delivered in a fly-away state, while the remaining units are to be manufactured in India, ensuring a minimum of 60 per cent indigenous content.

The Indian Air Force already operates 12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and is concurrently engaged with Airbus for the acquisition of C-295 transport aircraft. The latter project is set to introduce approximately 70 units into the IAF, with a majority being produced domestically in line with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Future Plans for the Indian Air Force

The Indian Air Force is undergoing a multifaceted modernisation strategy that includes a recent tender for the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter jets. This is part of a broader objective to enhance the operational readiness of the IAF, which also includes the addition of over 100 trainer aircraft to replace the ageing Hawk jet trainers. This upgrade is crucial for increasing the training capacity of the IAF, particularly in light of the growing number of fighter jet squadrons.

In addition to serving transport purposes, the newly acquired multirole transport aircraft could potentially be utilised as airborne refuelling tankers. This versatility would facilitate rapid troop movement and equipment transport, significantly improving logistical support during operations.

The tender for multirole transport aircraft not only represents a substantial investment in national security but also marks an important step in self-reliance within the defence sector. As partnerships between Indian companies and foreign manufacturers solidify, the programme is poised to foster technological advancement and provide a boost to the domestic aerospace industry.
