The two brothers from Pithoragarh, Anand Singh Karki and Bhupendra Singh Karki, have returned home after enduring a nearly 97-day ordeal in Russia. Their safe arrival on August 12, 2026, was facilitated by the urgent intervention of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the persistent efforts of state government officials. Following their return, the Chief Minister directly contacted the brothers to inquire about their health and gather details regarding their experience abroad.

The family of the two brothers has expressed immense relief after their long wait, extending their gratitude to the Chief Minister for his prompt and sensitive response to the situation. The brothers’ ordeal raised serious concerns due to their lack of communication with family members during their time in Russia, prompting fears for their safety and well-being.

Upon their departure from India on May 5, the brothers arrived in Moscow the following day, following which they reportedly faced numerous hardships in finding work. Their family alleged that they were promised employment opportunities for a significant fee, amounting to Rs 8 lakh, paid to a travel agency based in Sitarganj.

Investigations Into Employment Practices

The family reported that the brothers were not provided with the employment they had been assured of. Instead, they were allegedly coerced into performing unrequested tasks without compensation. Initial promises made by the travel agency soon devolved into adversity, with claims that the two were also subjected to threats and limitations on their freedom of movement.

Moreover, the family revealed that during their last communication, the brothers indicated fearful conditions resulting from nearby drone or missile attacks. This alarming context heightened the family’s anxiety over their sons’ safety, making the need for intervention increasingly urgent.

Upon learning of the situation, Chief Minister Dhami took immediate action, highlighting the seriousness of the predicament. He instructed relevant officials to coordinate directly with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Russia to expedite the brothers’ safe return. Ongoing communication and effort played a pivotal role in securing their repatriation.

Chief Minister Dhami reiterated his commitment to the people of Uttarakhand, stating that the safety and welfare of citizens in crisis situations, both locally and globally, remains a primary focus of the government. He emphasised that through effective coordination with federal agencies, the state government aims to provide all possible support during such emergencies.

The brothers’ return marks the end of a challenging chapter for their family, who can finally rejoice in their safety after a harrowing experience abroad. Their story also serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by many citizens seeking employment opportunities outside of India.
