The agitation by aspirants of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) has intensified at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi, marking the nineteenth day of demonstrations against alleged irregularities in the examinations. The students have gathered from across the state to voice their concerns and demand significant actions regarding their grievances.

In response to reports concerning the health of the protesting students, a medical team visited the site to conduct health checkups. SK Jha from Sadar Hospital noted that the majority of protesters were in stable condition, with basic medical care being provided to those experiencing minor health issues. According to Jha, crucial health indicators, such as blood pressure and oxygen levels, were reported as normal for most of the individuals examined.

The health team’s timely intervention aims to ensure the wellbeing of the students, whose commitment to the protest continues unabated. “Those who feel slightly unwell are being monitored and provided with necessary medical support,” SK Jha commented.

Political Responses to the Protests

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is obstructing the normal functions of the state Assembly amidst the ongoing protests. Soren stated that the government is dedicated to addressing the issues affecting the youth of the state. The Assembly was adjourned sine die a day earlier than planned due to disruptive actions from the opposition, who are demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the JPSC-JSSC examination irregularities.

After the adjournment, Soren emphasised that the government is taking steps to tackle the challenges identified by the youth, suggesting that the opposition was misusing parliamentary proceedings to divert attention. He commented on the adverse impact of central government policies on job creation for students and accused the previous BJP administration of enabling appointments from other states that disadvantaged local candidates.

Additionally, Soren noted the low employment figures within the region, stating, “The policies formulated by the central government are causing many students to lose job opportunities. It is apparent that the majority of selected candidates are from the local populace.”

Opposition Criticism of Government Handling of Issues

Babulal Marandi, the Leader of the Opposition, has condemned the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government for allegedly evading crucial questions related to the student protests. Marandi stated that during the Assembly proceedings, the Chief Minister failed to address the pressing issues of the students and diverting attention instead.

Marandi accused the Chief Minister of shielding certain officials implicated in the alleged irregularities, specifically pointing out that Prashant Kumar, the chairman of JSSC, has not been held accountable despite the accusations surfacing during his tenure. He called for immediate action against those responsible, asserting that government officials are complicit in the ongoing issues.

The ongoing protest reflects the frustration and determination of students from all 24 districts of Jharkhand, who are demanding the cancellation of the JSSC CGL examination and an investigation into the recurring paper leak incidents. The future of these aspirants hinges on the outcome of their collective action and the political responses that follow.
