Hinduja Family Retains Title of UK’s Richest with £38 Billion Fortune in 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Hinduja family has again been recognised as the wealthiest in the United Kingdom, as detailed in the 2026 edition of the ‘Sunday Times Rich List’ released on Friday. The family’s fortune is estimated at an impressive 38 billion pounds, marking the fifth consecutive year at the top of the rankings. This accomplishment comes despite significant global economic challenges over the past year.

The passing of Gopichand Hinduja last year at the age of 85 led to the family’s transition of leadership to his sons, Sanjay and Dheeraj Hinduja, who are now positioned as the heads of the fortune. The report highlights that the Hinduja Group has extensive operations across 38 countries, with investments in multiple sectors such as mobility, digital technology, and healthcare.

Significant Progress in Business Ventures

Sanjay Hinduja, 62, plays a pivotal role as the chairman of Gulf Oil International, while his younger brother Dheeraj, 54, oversees the automotive enterprise Ashok Leyland. Notably, Ashok Leyland has experienced considerable success, with its share price increasing nearly 40 per cent as more consumers in India shift towards electric vehicles. This trend is viewed as a major contributor to the company’s growth.

Additionally, IndusInd Bank, a financial services group based in Mumbai, has also shown promising performance, with a 14 per cent rise in its share value over the past year. Both companies are integral to the Hinduja family’s extensive business interests, illustrating their diversified portfolio across several sectors.

Despite economic fluctuations, the Hinduja family has managed to sustain and grow their wealth, reinforcing their prominent position within the UK economy. Their financial resilience serves as a testament to their strategic management and investment decisions, even during uncertain times.

Other Notable Wealthy Individuals and Changes in the Rankings

The latest rankings not only showcase the Hinduja family but also highlight other affluent individuals, notably the Reuben brothers, David and Simon, who continue to hold the second position with a reported wealth of 27.97 billion pounds. The brothers are currently involved in substantial renovation projects on historic properties in London, transforming them into luxury hotels.

Prakash Lohia, a textiles entrepreneur, has seen an increase in his ranking to the 28th position, with a fortune estimated at approximately 6.44 billion pounds. In contrast, Anil Agarwal of Vedanta Resources has experienced a decline, falling to the 43rd spot from 25th, with his wealth now estimated at 3.85 billion pounds.

The 38th edition of the ‘Rich List’ encapsulates the wealth of 350 individuals and families in the UK, with a combined total of 784 billion pounds, reflecting a 1.4 per cent increase from the previous year. However, the entry threshold for the rankings has decreased by 10 million pounds to 340 million pounds, indicating a sluggish global economic environment.

Furthermore, at least 15 foreign nationals who were present in last year’s list are no longer included, predominantly due to relocating after changes in the UK’s tax regulations. This shift underscores the dynamic nature of wealth retention and migration among the affluent in the wake of legislative adjustments.
