Geologists Warn of Landslide Risk Near Fateh Sagar Lake Spillway in Udaipur

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Geological Society of Rajasthan has pointed out the growing risk of landslides in the hills situated near the of Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur. This assessment was done by a team of senior geologists led by V.P. Sharma and Rajsesh Sharma.

What are the findings?

While inspecting, the team found that the condition of the slope is critical and there are visible cracks in the rocks that are just adjacent to the spillway (road leading to the Prabhu Neelkanth Mahadev Temple and Shri Giridhar Gopal Prachin Temple).

After thorough investigation, experts have said that the structure is weakened and there is a high possibility that rocks or boulders would fall on the road and lake. “Cracks alignment is parallel to the roadway, increasing the risk of rockfall, and posing a serious threat to public safety,” said one of the experts from the team.

Oldest rocks in India

These rocks are among the oldest rocks in India, noted the geologists and due to tectonic activities fractures have been developed in the rocks. And because of the geological weaknesses the slope has been destabilized, making it more vulnerable. The reason why there are high chances of rock falling, is the cracks flowing in the same direction as the road. Earlier similar rock falls had happened in the past and local residents had complained of smaller stones dislodging from the hillside. But, in recent years the risk has increased because of heavy rainfall. The rocks weaken as the water seeps inside the cracks.
