“Europe Sells Weapons, Which Are Used To Attack India”: EAM Jaishankar

The CSR Journal Magazine

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has defended India’s strategic energy choices, particularly in relation to its procurement of Russian crude oil. This response came during his remarks at the Kultaranta Talks held in Helsinki, Finland, on June 12. The minister faced criticism over India’s alleged sympathetic stance towards Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, particularly regarding its oil purchases.

In a session that included a journalist’s pointed questions about India’s position, Jaishankar asserted that India’s energy acquisition is driven by practical considerations of cost and availability. He noted that during the time of purchasing, much of the oil on the global market was Russian, as European countries were mainly sourcing their oil from the Middle East, a traditional supplier for India. This, he argued, influenced India’s energy choices.

Jaishankar’s comments highlighted a broader discourse on global energy dynamics, indicating that geopolitical circumstances shape energy procurement strategies. His remarks signified India’s intention to act based on national interests rather than external pressures.

Pointing Out Historical Inconsistencies

Meanwhile, the External Affairs Minister also drew attention to the historical context of arms supplies and their implications for global security. In a pointed remark, he stated that no European country has faced attacks from Indian weapons, in contrast to the historical use of European arms against India. Jaishankar stressed this point to remind the audience of India’s commitment to peace in the international arena.

When asked to elaborate, Jaishankar reiterated India’s long-standing concerns regarding weapons supplied by European nations which have been used against India. He emphasised that India has never posed a threat to Europe, asserting that accepting this reality is a reasonable stance within the context of global security issues.

This discussion reflects a significant shift in the narrative around India’s military and diplomatic posture, showcasing its role as a responsible actor while also maintaining sovereignty over its defence policies.

Reaffirming India’s Global Economic Role

In his discussions, Jaishankar also referenced an earlier recognition from the United States of India’s crucial role in maintaining global economic stability. He pointed out that in 2022, the U.S. had encouraged India to purchase Russian crude oil to help stabilise energy markets. This intervention was intended to mitigate the effects of inflation resulting from Western sanctions imposed on Russia.

Jaishankar maintained that India’s decisions regarding oil procurement are based solely on economic realities. He recalled a direct request from the U.S. urging India to engage in purchasing Russian oil during a time of heightened market volatility, reinforcing his argument that India prioritises energy security.

Furthermore, the External Affairs Minister raised concerns regarding the selective nature of Western sanctions, advocating for a more nuanced understanding of complex global trade relationships and energy security issues. Jaishankar’s remarks illustrate India’s intent to navigate these challenges independently while asserting its sovereign rights.
