As India prepares to commemorate its 80th Independence Day, Russian cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station have sent heartfelt wishes to the Indian people. The cosmonauts, holding the Indian tricolour, recognised the enduring friendship and collaboration between Russia and India in the realm of space exploration. Their video message highlighted the significance of this bond, calling attention to the shared goals and aspirations of both nations.

Historical Connection to Space Exploration

In their message, cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov acknowledged the importance of India’s Independence Day, offering wishes of peace and prosperity. He linked the celebrations to the 65th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s historic 1961 flight, which made him the first human in space. Gagarin’s visit to India later that year is regarded as a pivotal moment in the strengthening of Indo-Soviet relations, with his praise for India’s beauty and warmth resonating through the decades.

The video continued by underlining the rich history of India-Russia cooperation in space activities. This partnership began in 1975 with the launch of Aryabhata, India’s inaugural satellite. Nearly a decade later, in 1984, Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian citizen to travel to space, undertaking a mission aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11 that further solidified the ties between the two countries.

Citing the current era of collaboration, cosmonaut Anna Kikina mentioned India’s ambitious Gaganyaan project aimed at human spaceflight. The training of Indian astronauts, also referred to as Gaganyatris, at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia signifies the advancement of this partnership and the future exchanges in human space exploration.

Celebrating Collaboration through Joint Initiatives

The cosmonauts also referenced a joint competition initiated by Roscosmos and ISRO, which celebrates the ongoing cooperation in space exploration between the two nations. The winners of this competition had their entries showcased as part of the Independence Day message, symbolising the combined efforts of both countries to promote educational and scientific objectives.

In closing their message, the cosmonauts expressed a heartfelt wish for India to enjoy continued peace, prosperity, and achievements in the field of space exploration. The sentiment of enduring friendship was underscored by cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, who proclaimed, “Long live India-Russia friendship,” while brandishing the Indian flag aboard the International Space Station.
