Dr Dangs Lab Launches India’s First Nationwide Multi-Cancer Detection Test1

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dr Dangs Lab has set a significant milestone in the realm of cancer diagnostics by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zydus Lifesciences Limited. The agreement aims to introduce the Shield™ multi-cancer detection test, developed by Guardant Health, across India. This collaboration highlights the increasing need for advanced cancer screening options as the country grapples with an escalating cancer burden.

The Shield test represents a vital step towards enhancing the accessibility and effectiveness of cancer screening in India. The partnership seeks not only to provide innovative diagnostics but also to address a crucial gap in preventive healthcare, which is essential for improving cancer outcomes in the nation.

This initiative is particularly critical as the incidence of cancer in India has been projected to rise by approximately 12-15 per cent in the coming years, according to estimates from the Indian Council of Medical Research. Hence, facilitating early detection through advanced methodologies is becoming increasingly urgent.

Rising Cancer Burden in India

Statistics indicate that cancer remains a significant public health challenge in India, with diseases such as breast, lung, cervix, colorectal, and oral cancers being the most prevalent. Alarmingly, many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, leading to diminished treatment success and poorer survival rates.

Current screening methods tend to focus on individual organs, limiting their overall reach. Conventional tumour markers, although beneficial in certain contexts, lack the specificity required for broader population-based screenings, especially among individuals without apparent symptoms. This limitation underscores the pressing need for a more comprehensive approach to cancer screening.

The introduction of the Shield MCD test aims to change this landscape. It is a methylation-based blood test that can identify multiple cancer types, including bladder, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. Designed for individuals aged 45 years and older who are considered at average risk for cancer, the test is a crucial advancement in accessible cancer screening.

Enhancing Early Detection Through Technology

The Shield MCD test has gained recognition in the United States, having obtained Breakthrough Device Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This designation was awarded based on the test’s strong predictive performance in identifying cancers and their tissue origins during the National Cancer Institute’s Vanguard Study. The findings support the potential of this technology to transition cancer diagnosis from late to early stages, enhancing treatment effectiveness.

Simranjit Singh, Chief Executive Officer of Guardant Health AMEA, expressed enthusiasm for partnering with Dr Dangs Lab and Zydus Lifesciences to disseminate the test more widely across India. He emphasised that broadening the accessibility of screening is vital in bridging gaps in preventive healthcare, thereby addressing the high mortality-to-incidence ratio that the country currently faces.

Dr Arjun Dang, CEO of Dr Dangs Lab, reiterated the commitment to providing advanced diagnostics to the Indian population. He indicated that this collaboration exemplifies the lab’s dedication to patient care and health outcomes, facilitated by its expansive reach and home collection services which ensure geographical inclusivity.

Additionally, Dr Nitesh Rohtagi, Director of Oncology at Fortis Gurugram, commented on the ability of the Shield MCD test to make earlier-stage detection a reality. He noted that the test could significantly improve health outcomes by facilitating more timely interventions, ultimately changing the current dynamics of cancer care in India.
