DMK Alleges Setup in Thirunavukkarasu’s Arrest, Claims TVK Behind Controversy

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has described the recent arrest of Thirunavukkarasu, linked to an alleged horse-trading case, as a deliberate setup. The party asserted that he was affiliated with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and accused the ruling party led by Chief Minister Vijay of orchestrating this controversy with the intention of targeting the opposition. DMK Organisational Secretary TKS Elangovan expressed strong disapproval of the allegations against the party.

Details of the Allegations Against Thirunavukkarasu

The controversy surfaced after TVK MLA N Elaiyaraja alleged that he was offered between Rs 30 and 35 crore to defect from his party. In a televised interview, Elaiyaraja claimed that Thirunavukkarasu had attempted multiple times to persuade him to make the switch, alleging that ten MLAs from TVK and a sitting minister were reportedly prepared to join the DMK. This claim has led to a broader investigation involving police action against Thirunavukkarasu and others.

Following Elaiyaraja’s complaint, Tamil Nadu Police arrested Thirunavukkarasu, along with Naresh and Thiyagarajan. The First Information Report (FIR) also named V Senthil Balaji and his brother Ashok Kumar, alleging their involvement in the purported conspiracy. The DMK has consistently denied all the allegations, with Elangovan labelling them as fabricated attempts to politically undermine the party.

Elangovan stated that Thirunavukkarasu was a student at Loyola College and involved with TVK supporters, emphasising that he had openly supported Vijay’s party. He dismissed the accusations as ludicrous, suggesting that the allegations were part of a strategy to distract the public from the ruling party’s own alleged corrupt practices, specifically regarding horse-trading.

Responses from Other Political Parties

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while not endorsing the DMK’s viewpoint, hinted that the controversy could be a strategic manoeuvre by TVK. BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam elaborated on the possibility that the allegations might be a tactic employed by TVK to divert attention from claims of horse-trading against them. He critiqued the situation, suggesting that the party’s practices may not align with democratic principles.

Selvam highlighted that several elected representatives who had previously contested against TVK have joined the party, labelling this transition as detrimental to the democratic environment. He dismissed TVK’s assertion of being a “pure force” in politics as unfounded, calling it “complete nonsense” and raising concerns about the implications of such political shifts for the electoral landscape.

The ongoing political tension surrounding this case reflects broader issues within Tamil Nadu’s political scenario. The interactions and allegations between the DMK and TVK, coupled with the police investigations, illustrate the complexities of regional politics. As various parties attempt to position themselves, the ramifications of these events could influence future political alignments and voter sentiments.
