Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the Char Dham Yatra has been intermittently halted to ensure the safety of the pilgrims amid heavy rainfall and landslides affecting the region. CM Dhami highlighted that the recent weather conditions necessitate these precautionary measures to protect visitors.

The Chief Minister reported that several areas, including Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli, have been experiencing persistent rain over the last two to three days. This has caused water levels in rivers to rise, subsequently leading to landslides in various locations.

Dhami to reporters emphasised that the decision to pause the Yatra will depend on the ongoing situation. He stated, “Our top priority is the safety of our pilgrims,” indicating the government’s commitment to safeguarding those who travel to these revered sites.

Current Situation of the Kanwar Yatra

Despite the challenges posed by the weather, CM Dhami assured that the Kanwar Yatra is progressing smoothly, with appropriate arrangements in place to facilitate the devotees. He conveyed confidence in the state administration’s capability to manage the pilgrimage effectively amidst adverse weather conditions.

Vikas Tyagi, the Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department, provided updates on the water levels of the Ganges in Haridwar, stating that they are currently above the warning threshold but have not reached critical levels. He explained that due to rising water upstream, there may be further increases in the water flow, yet he reassured that the situation remains manageable.

Tyagi noted that although the water levels are elevated, there is presently no immediate cause for concern, asserting that the authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety during the pilgrimage period.

Preparedness for Emergency Situations

CM Dhami underscored the government’s readiness to tackle any issues that may arise due to the weather and related incidents. He mentioned the establishment of separate flood management divisions and the appointment of nodal officers to oversee these efforts.

Each district has implemented its own disaster management system, allowing for efficient responses to emergencies. The administration is actively sharing updates and information concerning conditions in the downstream plains, demonstrating proactive engagement with local communities.

With these measures in place, the Uttarakhand government reiterates its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of pilgrims participating in both the Char Dham Yatra and the Kanwar Yatra, amidst the ongoing challenges posed by the weather conditions.
