Mohammed Shami, a seasoned fast bowler, is determined to return to the Indian national team, even after being overlooked for selection despite impressive performances in domestic cricket. At 36 years old, Shami has not played for India since the 2025 Champions Trophy and is now focused on making a comeback before the next ODI World Cup in 2027.

Shami was instrumental in India’s fast-bowling success from 2015 to 2023, yet his future in international cricket remains uncertain. Despite his consistent performances and full fitness, he has faced repeated exclusions from the squad. The selection committee has not entirely dismissed his prospects, as they continue to recognize his achievements.

Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, commented on Shami’s status earlier this year, acknowledging his domestic performances while suggesting that his readiness currently aligns more with T20 format. This evaluation, however, seems at odds with Shami’s track record, including 37 wickets in the latest Ranji Trophy and 15 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Shami’s Commitment to Domestic Excellence

Following the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) guidelines, Shami has actively participated in domestic competitions. His dedication to maintaining peak fitness has led to a weight reduction of five kilograms since last season. His childhood coach, Mohammed Badruddin, noted that Shami is in high spirits and currently attributes his efforts to a proactive attitude towards the upcoming season.

Badruddin expressed confidence in Shami’s capabilities, insisting that the Indian team would benefit from Shami’s experience, particularly given the recent injury challenges facing the fast-bowling unit. The coach reiterated that Shami remains ready to contribute when called upon, highlighting his commitment to the country’s cricketing needs.

The last year has seen significant challenges for India’s bowling resources, with injuries affecting numerous players. Young fast bowler Harshit Rana has faced persistent issues, missing critical matches, including the T20 World Cup. Furthermore, Gurnoor Brar’s performance in England raised concerns as he conceded high runs in his ODI appearances.

Shami’s Experience Recognised Amid Injury Concerns

Badruddin highlighted the importance of experienced bowlers like Shami during challenging overseas conditions. He articulated that India’s bowling attack struggled during the recent series in England, where Shami’s expertise could have added substantial value. India’s fast-bowling dynamics have faced instability, with a rotating cast of players unable to deliver consistent performances.

The fast-bowling department has been troubled by the relentless demands placed upon them, limiting opportunities for adequate recovery. Badruddin raised concerns regarding the ongoing intensive training without sufficient rest for the players, calling for a balance that allows for both gym conditioning and on-ground fitness.

With the ongoing search for a reliable pace attack ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, the selectors are yet to clarify Shami’s standing in future selections. His proven record in South Africa, where he has secured 44 wickets in 11 matches at an impressive average of 22.68, further solidifies his case for inclusion in significant tournaments.
