During a press conference held in the Oval Office on August 6, US President Donald Trump expressed his belief that the ongoing conflict involving Iran may conclude “pretty soon.” He conveyed confidence that the Islamic Republic “can’t go much longer,” reflecting his assessment of the situation. Trump underscored the importance of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, stating that the potential ramifications would be catastrophic not just for the Middle East, but globally.

Trump elaborated on his motivations for involving the US in discussions pertaining to Iran, categorically asserting that a nuclear-armed Iran posed a severe threat. He stated, “We’re not gonna let that happen,” and emphasised the significance of protecting global safety. The President expressed hope for the imminent conclusion of hostilities, suggesting that conditions might lead to peace shortly.

In his comments, Trump stated, “I think the war’s got to end pretty soon. I don’t think they can go much longer.” His optimism seemed buoyed by what he perceives as positive developments in negotiations regarding regional stability.

Negotiations and the Strait of Hormuz

Trump also provided insights into the ongoing negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime corridor for global oil shipments. He indicated that discussions were in progress, though the situation remains complex. He mentioned the presence of a blockade maintained by the US Navy, which plays a significant role in regulating maritime traffic through the strait.

Addressing the delicacy of the situation, Trump remarked on the risks associated with potential military actions, noting the possibility of mines affecting vessel movements. Despite these challenges, the President conveyed confidence in achieving a diplomatic resolution and mentioned that he was directly involved in the negotiations. He stated, “I think we are doing fine… it could be soon,” indicating a sense of urgency in finding a resolution.

While hopes for a peaceful agreement are rising, concerns persist regarding military posturing. On August 6, Iran’s Acting Defense Minister Brigadier General Seyed Majid Ibn Reza reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to respond decisively to any threats, particularly from the US and Israel. He claimed that Iran’s military capabilities were strong and prepared to address any challenges effectively.

US-Iran Relations and Diplomatic Challenges

President Trump’s statements are set against a backdrop of increasing uncertainty regarding US-Iran relations, particularly following the failure of the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in June to cease hostilities. The dynamics of diplomacy between Washington and Tehran remain intricate and fraught with challenges.

Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, responded to US assertions by accusing Washington of engaging in what he termed “theater diplomacy.” He dismissed US tactics as counterproductive and stressed the importance of fulfilling commitments. Ghalibaf’s comments included a critique of the approach taken by US officials, who he suggested were resorting to intimidation and misleading narratives.

Compounding the complexity of the situation, US Vice President JD Vance characterised negotiations with Iran as likely to be “messy” and protracted, citing internal divisions within Iran’s leadership. Vance reaffirmed the Trump administration’s commitment to employing military, economic, and diplomatic measures to secure an outcome favourable to the US while asserting that Iran must never obtain nuclear capabilities.
