Dimple Yadav, a Member of Parliament from the Samajwadi Party, has publicly denounced the actions of police officers during student protests at Jantar Mantar. She characterised the events of July 20 as a “black day for democracy” and called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. According to Yadav, students experienced physical violence, with reports indicating that they were struck, their garments were damaged, and excessive force was utilised by police personnel.

Yadav expressed her outrage over the officers allegedly acting aggressively, stating that some seemed to operate like “goons.” While a section of officers conducted themselves appropriately, others reportedly removed their identification badges and assaulted students. Yadav claimed that contrary to acceptable practices, force was used on upper body areas rather than strictly on the legs as stipulated by regulations.

The MP highlighted the emotional impact of these actions, remarking that some police officers displayed shame during the incident. She emphasised a nationwide demand for accountability from the government, stressing the need to protect the dignity and safety of students. Yadav’s remarks resonated with many who witnessed the confrontation.

Allegations of Government Arrogance

In her strong statements, Yadav asserted that the current administration exemplifies unprecedented levels of arrogance, ruthlessness, and disregard for citizens. She emphasised that the events at Jantar Mantar illustrate a troubling trend where peaceful protesters face violence instead of receiving support. Yadav lamented the treatment of students, stating that the government appears uninterested in upholding constitutional values, opting instead for an ideology aligned with the RSS.

The protests were triggered by allegations of examination irregularities, with many students and members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding accountability for an alleged paper leak incident. The situation escalated around Parliament Street, leading to confrontations between police and demonstrators, resulting in injuries among the Delhi Police personnel as they attempted to manage the crowds.

The CJP claimed that its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, was arrested during the protest, further complicating the situation. However, the Delhi Police have strongly refuted these claims, asserting that Dipke was never in custody and remained accessible to the public during the protest.

Police Response to Protests and Security Measures

In light of the protests, the Delhi Police implemented heightened security measures around New Delhi, particularly as the Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced. Prohibitory orders remain in force under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain order during this period. This intensified security was a direct response to the protests, where police employed mild lathi charges to disperse demonstrators as they attempted to approach the Parliament building.

Earlier in the day, Dipke concluded an indefinite hunger strike at the urging of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently receiving medical attention after undergoing a 21-day fast. This development indicates the ongoing commitment of activists to advocate for students’ rights in the context of education reforms.

Throughout these unfolding events, the opposition has indicated plans to raise the issue in Parliament. The actions and responses surrounding the protests at Jantar Mantar reflect ongoing tensions between student groups and government authorities, with resolutions yet to be found regarding the allegations of irregularities in examinations.
