Cocaine Worth Rs 1,745 Crore Seized in Mumbai

The CSR Journal Magazine

Authorities have announced one of the largest cocaine seizures in India’s history, with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) recovering 349 kilograms of high-quality cocaine. The estimated value of this haul stands at approximately Rs 1,745 crore. This significant operation took place within the Mumbai region, where the narcotics were cleverly hidden within cricket gloves and pads.

The operation, known as White Strike, was the result of more than six months of meticulous intelligence work and surveillance. Following specific inputs, NCB teams executed simultaneous raids in the logistics corridor connecting Kalamboli and Bhiwandi, two regions in Navi Mumbai and Thane. This initiative unveiled a sophisticated drug supply network that utilised warehouse facilities and concealed transportation methods.

The NCB’s breakthrough originated when officials intercepted a Maruti Suzuki Super Carry vehicle near the KWC Warehousing Complex in Kalamboli. Upon inspection, operatives discovered 136 packets of cocaine, each weighing around one kilogram, concealed in cartons labelled as cricket gear. The immediate arrest of one suspect occurred at this site, marking an important step in the investigation.

Warehouse Operations Exposed

During the questioning of the detained individual, investigators learned of another shipment stored in Bhiwandi, a critical hub for warehousing. In response, NCB teams quickly raided a warehouse located in Rehnal village, where they seized an additional 213 packets of cocaine, also weighing one kilogram each. This second operation was executed swiftly, targeting Laxman Compound, positioned near the Rehnal Bus Stand.

Further information from NCB officials indicates that the cocaine was cleverly hidden within the cavities of imported machinery, showcasing a level of sophistication in the smuggling operation. To evade detection, each packet was encased in nine layers of polythene, with an additional layer coated in a greasy black substance. The presence of Bhiwandi’s logistics infrastructure hints at a well-structured system encompassing the import, storage, and distribution of the drug.

The NCB has initiated an extensive investigation to identify and capture key members of the syndicate, including the alleged kingpin, handlers, financiers, and intended recipients of the seized consignment. The operation represents a significant advancement in the agency’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking.

Government Reaction and Significance of Seizure

Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the efforts of the NCB, referring to the operation as a groundbreaking example of effectively tracing a minor lead to dismantle a broader drug network. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to decisively combat drug cartels, remarking on the impressive scale of the seizure. Shah stated, “This is a trailblazing example of a bottom-to-top approach,” and extended congratulations to the NCB team for their monumental success.

Officials have noted the significance of this seizure, as annual cocaine recoveries in India generally fluctuate between 200 and 300 kilograms. Consequently, this operation stands out as one of the most substantial in recent years, marking a pivotal moment in the fight against drug trafficking in the country.

As the NCB continues its investigation, the implications of this drug bust are expected to reverberate across the narcotics landscape in India, potentially exposing further links between local and international drug trafficking networks.
