Amit Shah To Chair Key Anti-Narcotics Meet On Friday

The CSR Journal Magazine

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, is set to lead the tenth apex-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre on Friday. This important assembly will primarily focus on the growing concerns surrounding synthetic drugs and the illicit trafficking that occurs via the darknet. It aims to develop strategies for enhancing rehabilitation services for individuals battling drug addiction over the next three years.

This meeting will gather crucial participants from 44 central ministries and departments, alongside 108 representatives from state governments and drug law enforcement agencies. The hybrid format suggests a blend of in-person and virtual participation, allowing a comprehensive exchange of ideas aimed at bolstering efforts towards creating a drug-free India.

Release of Vision Document for Narcotics Control

During the meeting, Amit Shah is expected to introduce a vision document on narcotics control for the period from 2026 to 2029. This document is reportedly the result of extensive consultations that involved various Central government departments, law enforcement agencies handling drug-related crimes, and other relevant stakeholders.

The vision document is designed to outline a collaborative framework addressing the drug issue. It tackles the three critical areas of demand reduction, supply reduction, and harm reduction. Furthermore, the document delineates a network-centric enforcement strategy, establishing clear responsibilities, timelines, and measurable objectives for all involved parties.

The comprehensive approach aims to integrate enforcement efforts, demand reduction initiatives, rehabilitation services, public awareness campaigns, capacity building, and inter-agency coordination. The government has indicated that this document will act as a foundational guide for future policy-making and reinforcing institutional efforts aimed at countering drug-related challenges.

Emphasis on Fight Against Drug Trafficking

Amit Shah is also anticipated to unveil the National Crime Bureau’s (NCB) annual report for 2025 and inaugurate newly constructed NCB zonal offices located in Jammu and Guwahati. This meeting is considered significant as it is expected to strengthen the government’s stated “Zero Tolerance Policy” against drug trafficking, an initiative frequently underscored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Additionally, in line with the ongoing Drug Disposal Fortnight Campaign, approximately 2,09,500 kg of seized drugs, valued at Rs 6,000 crore, are to be destroyed by central and state law enforcement agencies throughout India. This initiative illustrates an active effort to tackle the drug problem at multiple levels and showcases a commitment to eradicating narcotics.

The high-level meeting is poised to serve as a platform for a thorough evaluation of the collective actions taken by stakeholders in combating the drug crisis facing the nation. It will underscore the importance of a coordinated approach among various government parts to effectively address both drug trafficking and abuse across India over the next three years, as highlighted in the government’s statements.
