Major Drug Seizure at Airport Leads to Mob Violence in Manipur

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant drug seizure at Tulihal Airport in Manipur on April 14, 2026, has resulted in escalating violence in the Bishnupur district. The events unfolded after a joint team from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Airport Police apprehended a suspected drug peddler identified as Md Sabir Ahamed. He was detained around 10:30 am with approximately 6.74 kg of alleged brown sugar concealed in his checked baggage.

The seized substance, described as an impure form of heroin, prompted officials to transfer Ahamed and the contraband to the Singjamei Police Station, where a case was registered for further investigation. This incident is set against a backdrop of rising tension in the region, recently exacerbated by a bomb explosion that claimed two children’s lives.

Rumours Fuel Escalation of Violence

Following the drug seizure, preliminary interrogation of Ahamed revealed allegedly hidden arms and ammunition located in the Kwakta area. Acting on this information, security forces initiated an operation to locate these weapons. However, while en route near Thinungei in Bishnupur district around 1:30 pm, the security convoy faced disruption from local residents who blocked their path. This incident occurred in the midst of unverified rumours circulating about the security personnel.

A large crowd soon gathered, and as tensions mounted, portions of the mob turned violent, leading to the damaging and burning of two police vehicles. Attempts to detain security personnel further escalated the situation, highlighting the volatile atmosphere in the area.

In response to the aggression, additional security forces were deployed. The mob was eventually dispersed using minimum necessary force, which included tear gas shells. Several civilians reportedly sustained injuries during the unrest and were given medical assistance at local facilities.

Ongoing Security Operations and Public Urging

Following the outbreak of violence, authorities confirmed that four individuals have been arrested for their involvement. Efforts are ongoing to identify additional participants linked to the incidents of arson and unlawful assembly. Authorities are taking steps to restore calm and prevent any further violence in the region.

To maintain law and order, security forces conducted flag marches through the affected areas. Officials have urged residents not to share unverified information and to cooperate with ongoing security operations. Continuous search operations and area control exercises are being carried out across sensitive zones in the state to mitigate further unrest.

The situation in Bishnupur remains critical, as authorities strive to manage the aftermath of the drug bust and the subsequent violent reactions. The community is being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to assist in restoring peace.
