The BRICS education ministers gathered on August 7, 2026, in Bhubaneswar to endorse a collaborative declaration aimed at enhancing educational frameworks across member nations. The meeting was marked by discussions centred on Artificial Intelligence, skill development, research partnerships, and promoting academic mobility. This collective approach seeks to prepare students for future careers and emerging technologies while solidifying education as a fundamental aspect of cooperation among Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with other participant countries.

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi hosted the meeting and emphasised the importance of evolving education systems to fulfill the aspirations of future generations while maintaining a foundation in human values. He reiterated India’s BRICS Chairship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” highlighting the necessity of placing learners, educators, and researchers at the forefront of educational policy reform.

Key Priorities Established in the Declaration

The declaration outlines five primary objectives that the BRICS nations have collectively agreed to advance. Firstly, it aims to enhance access to Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) and improve foundational literacy and numeracy through inclusive policies and the development of age-appropriate digital learning tools. The second focus area is the enhancement of technical and vocational education, facilitated by the BRICS Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Cooperation Alliance, alongside an initiative for an International Skill Gap Study that member countries can opt to participate in voluntarily.

A significant emphasis is placed on fostering research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The member nations proposed to champion collaborative research projects, nurture innovation-driven enterprises, and promote the ethical and responsible application of Artificial Intelligence in educational contexts. These efforts are intended to bolster the research and innovation landscapes within their respective countries.

Another notable aim is to facilitate smoother academic exchanges across BRICS nations. The ministers have expressed intentions to advance discussions surrounding a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the Mutual Recognition of Qualifications (MRQ). Implementation of this agreement could substantially ease the process for students and professionals seeking to have their qualifications acknowledged across member countries, thereby promoting greater academic mobility and collaboration.

Focus on Traditional Knowledge and International Collaboration

India has additionally put forth guiding principles to enhance academic collaboration focusing on traditional and indigenous knowledge systems. The declaration acknowledged this initiative and recommended that the BRICS Network University explore the establishment of a new international thematic group centred on this area of study. Such measures are intended to enrich educational frameworks with diverse perspectives drawn from the cultural heritage of member nations.

Delegates from Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Indonesia, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates participated in this significant meeting. The outcomes underscore a shared commitment among the nations to create educational systems that are inclusive, resilient, and adept at meeting future challenges. Anticipation of further cooperation is expected as the member nations prepare for the upcoming 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12–13, 2026, in New Delhi.
