India will take the lead in hosting the BRICS Education Ministers’ Meeting in Bhubaneswar on Friday. This significant event will be led by Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi, who is expected to engage in discussions aimed at enhancing collaboration in the education sector among member nations.

The gathering will include education ministers, senior officials, and representatives from Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Indonesia, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE. These delegates will discuss a range of topics vital for the development of educational frameworks within their respective countries.

The agenda for the meeting will primarily focus on several key areas, including Early Childhood Care and Education, skill development, as well as research and innovation initiatives. The mutual recognition of academic qualifications and the development of academic leadership within BRICS nations will also be critical points of discussion

Preparations and Previous Meetings

Minister Joshi arrived in Odisha for a two-day visit preceding the meeting. He will represent India at the ministerial discussions, which are anticipated to build on previous engagements aimed at fostering educational ties within BRICS.

Prior to this ministerial meeting, the Ministry of Education hosted the 3rd BRICS Senior Officials’ Meeting on August 5, 2026, in Bhubaneswar. This assembly served to prepare the groundwork for the forthcoming ministers’ discussions, allowing officials to review the draft of the BRICS Education Ministers’ Declaration.

During this senior officials’ meeting, participants deliberated on the proposed declaration, shared their feedback, and sought common ground on its contents. The exchanges aimed to ensure a comprehensive agreement that would be presented for adoption during the ministers’ meeting.

Key Focus Areas of the Deliberations

The discussions at the senior officials’ meeting underscored the importance of enhancing collaboration in Early Childhood Care and Education, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training. Emphasis was also placed on fostering joint research and innovation projects across the member states.

Moreover, the representatives highlighted the necessity for mutual recognition of educational qualifications, the nurturing of academic leadership, and adherence to the BRICS Guiding Principles on Traditional and Indigenous Knowledge Systems.
