Iran’s Interior Minister, Eskandar Momeni, attended the BRICS Ministers of Interior Meeting in New Delhi on July 24. This event brought together interior and home ministers from BRICS member countries to enhance collaboration in addressing security issues, including counter-terrorism, organised crime, and cybersecurity.

The Iranian Embassy in India confirmed Minister Momeni’s participation and highlighted the importance of the meeting in strengthening coordination on shared security challenges. The discussions were aimed at fostering cooperative strategies to combat threats affecting the member states.

Earlier, on July 23, the Iranian Embassy indicated that Momeni had arrived in the national capital, where he was welcomed by the Director General of the Ministry of Home Affairs. His visit underscores the commitment of Iran to engage with its BRICS partners on matters of internal security.

Bilateral Discussions Planned on Security Issues

During his time in New Delhi, Momeni is scheduled to address key issues during the BRICS ministerial meeting. He will engage in bilateral talks with his counterparts from other BRICS nations, focusing on expanding cooperation in internal security, counter-terrorism, and the prevention of organised crime.

The agenda also includes discussions on disaster management, law enforcement, and border security. The meeting aims to solidify the foundations for collaborative efforts against common threats, promoting a unified approach to enhance security across all member states.

In addition to the interior ministers’ meeting, Momeni will participate in the BRICS Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction, hosted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). This event, chaired by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, will assemble ministers and heads of delegations to address disaster resilience and sustainability.

Commitment to Disaster Risk Management

The Disaster Risk Reduction meeting will concentrate on themes of resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainable development. It aims to explore climate-smart infrastructure and partnerships that support resilient development, aligning with the objectives set forth in earlier declarations.

The BRICS cooperation on disaster management has evolved since the Udaipur Declaration in 2016 and has led to the formation of a Joint Task Force on Disaster Management. The recent Kazan Declaration of 2024 institutionalised the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Group and established the BRICS DRR Work Plan for 2025-2028.

During the ministerial discussions, it is anticipated that a BRICS Joint Statement on Disaster Risk Reduction will be adopted, reaffirming the collective commitment to enhancing disaster resilience and institutional cooperation. This reflects India’s leadership as BRICS Chair and its emphasis on inclusive governance and international cooperation in bolstering global disaster resilience.

BRICS comprises eleven prominent emerging markets and developing nations, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. The group serves as a crucial platform for dialogue and cooperation regarding contemporary global challenges, both regional and international.
