Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the 57th convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on August 8, where an estimated 3,036 students will receive degrees. This includes the graduation of 587 PhD scholars alongside a diverse group of undergraduates and postgraduates. The ceremony will also see the presentation of prestigious awards, such as the President’s Gold Medal and Director’s Gold Medal, to top-performing students.

The convocation marks a significant milestone, as the institute will graduate its first batches in new courses including the Bachelor of Design (BDes) and the Executive MBA. The event will feature the presence of notable guests, including Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi and NITI Aayog member Prof. Abhay Karandikar, further elevating the occasion.

Academic Initiatives and Developments at IIT Delhi

In a recent press briefing, IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee outlined the institute’s new initiatives aimed at enhancing academic collaboration. IIT Delhi has established Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 18 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) across India to foster a network for academic and research collaboration. This will enable the exchange of both students and faculty, along with facilitating joint research efforts.

Additionally, the institute has introduced the ALIGN programme to support this new framework, which focuses on innovation and national growth. The emphasis is on improving research capabilities while simultaneously expanding educational partnerships throughout the country.

Efforts to bolster student wellbeing have also been initiated, including the introduction of a placement mentorship programme. This initiative allows students who have secured placements to guide final-year students through the recruitment process, helping with resumes and interview preparation. A peer-support initiative titled ‘Call for a Friend’ aims to provide emotional support to students during critical placement periods.

Research and International Collaborations

IIT Delhi has reported considerable achievements in research and development, with sponsored projects valued at around ₹600 crore in the 2025-26 fiscal year alone. The institute has undertaken research projects worth approximately ₹4,000 crore over the past decade, involving various national missions and government support.

The institution’s intellectual property portfolio has grown substantially, boasting 1,871 assets, including 1,756 patents. In the past year, IIT Delhi filed 196 patents and formed 26 licensing agreements while incubating 26 startups through the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), showcasing a robust innovation ecosystem.

Furthermore, the institute has expanded its international reach, with an increase in the number of international students in full-time programmes. New academic offerings include a postgraduate diploma in Solar Systems and Management in collaboration with the International Solar Alliance and France’s Institut National de l’Energie Solaire.

Infrastructure Developments and Future Prospects

At the Sonipat campus, IIT Delhi has completed a large research and academic building covering 9,500 square metres and is establishing Centres of Excellence focused on healthcare technologies and handloom technology. The campus will also house facilities for testing materials under extreme conditions, reflecting the institute’s commitment to advancing research capabilities.

The institute’s Abu Dhabi campus has also seen growth in the academic year 2025-26, introducing a BTech programme in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Energy and Sustainability, which highlights the institute’s expansion in global educational initiatives.

Through ongoing collaborations with industry leaders, including partnerships with Horiba Technical Centre and Cisco, IIT Delhi is positioning itself to lead in areas such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity research, thus preparing its graduates to meet future challenges in the technological landscape.
