Bengaluru Metro Experiences Second Service Disruption in Three Days

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bengaluru Metro has faced its second disruption in three days, with officials identifying a metal chain from a commuter as the cause. This incident occurred on Thursday, June 25, affecting the Purple Line at the Cubbon Park Metro Station.

The issue arose around 7.36 pm when the train’s doors failed to close properly. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) stated that the problem was rectified within 17 minutes. An investigation by the Operations and Maintenance teams disclosed that the metal chain had become wedged in the train door guideway, hampering the closing mechanism.

BMRCL confirmed there were no technical malfunctions within the train’s equipment. As a precaution, passengers were evacuated from the train during the incident to ensure safety.

Impact on Commuters Due to Recent Disruptions

The disruption at Cubbon Park on June 25 was the second occurrence of service interruption in a short span, after a technical issue had a similar effect on Tuesday, June 23. That earlier incident also took place at Cubbon Park during peak hours, leading to considerable crowding at various metro stations.

During both incidents, many office-goers faced difficulties returning home, with numerous commuters resorting to alternative transport options such as auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs. The normal operations on the Purple Line only resumed on the early morning of Wednesday, June 24.

These disruptions caused significant delays, frustrating commuters and resulting in heavy congestion on the surrounding roads. The situation highlighted the operational challenges faced by the Bengaluru Metro, particularly during peak travel times.

Political Reactions and Concerns Over Frequent Disruptions

He shared a video purportedly showing people climbing onto trucks to reach their destinations, suggesting that the congestion had forced commuters into desperate measures. Surya’s comments reflected broader concerns regarding the city’s transport infrastructure and governance.

According to Surya, there have been nearly 20 reported technical faults and service disturbances across the Bengaluru Metro network since January 2024, with the Purple Line being the most affected corridor. This statement underscores the recurring challenges that commuters have faced, raising questions about the reliability of the metro system.

The June 23 incident has been characterised as one of the most severe disruptions in recent history for the Bengaluru Metro, reflecting an urgent need for improved operational management to mitigate future occurrences and enhance commuter experience.
