The recent shooting at a school in Nonthaburi, just outside Bangkok, has resulted in the deaths of eight individuals after a critically injured 12-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The tragic event unfolded on Friday at Debsirin Nonthaburi School when a 14-year-old student allegedly opened fire on his peers, leading to chaos and panic.

According to officials, the alleged shooter reportedly took his own life following the attack. Before the incident at the school, he is also said to have killed his two grandparents at their home earlier that day. The Health Ministry in Thailand has reported that 14 individuals are still receiving medical care, with seven in critical condition as of Saturday, predominantly comprising students aged between 12 and 14 years old.

The shooting occurred around 10 am, after which the school issued a Facebook post urging for blood donations for the injured students. As families mourned their losses, the bodies of the deceased were claimed from Bangkok’s Institute of Forensic Medicine, including that of the accused shooter and five school staff members.

Victims and Forensic Findings

An investigation into the victims revealed that most experienced single bullet wounds to vital areas such as the chest or head. Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, head of the forensic institute, noted that the gunshot wound of the alleged shooter matched the weapon he used during the incident. Toxicology and further forensic analyses are anticipated to provide more information regarding the circumstances surrounding this tragedy.

The firearm involved in the shooting, described as small and compact, was legally owned by the boy’s grandfather. Reports have emerged suggesting that the teenager exhibited signs of stress related to school. However, some family members stated they were unaware of any significant issues that may have contributed to his actions.

The school, accommodating around 3,000 students aged 12 to 18, announced a suspension of classes from August 10 to 14, instructing staff to work remotely during this period. The move aims to allow the community to cope with the aftermath of the incident.

Community Reaction and Gun Ownership Concerns

Additionally, parents have visited the school to retrieve belongings left by their children during the incident. One father remarked that his son, who was present at the school during the shooting, is struggling to come to terms with the situation and has been unable to sleep alone since the event.
