A 25-year-old delivery agent for Zepto was reportedly assaulted in Bengaluru during the early hours of Saturday. The victim, who has been identified as Basavaraj, was engaged in a late-night food delivery when the incident occurred. He is currently pursuing his education while also working for a quick-commerce delivery platform.

Authorities stated that the attack took place around 4.40 am after Basavaraj completed an order. He was travelling from the 4th Phase area in Yelahanka New Town towards Santhosh Nagar at the time of the incident. The police revealed that before the physical assault, Basavaraj allegedly faced verbal abuse from a group of young women in Hindi.

Details of the Incident

According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by Basavaraj, the trouble began when he approached the group to inquire why he was being insulted, explaining that he did not understand Hindi and requesting that they speak to him in Kannada instead. He alleged that the group continued their abusive behaviour, which escalated when they attempted to physically assault him.

In response to the escalating situation, Basavaraj called the police helpline number 112. He also contacted his acquaintance, Ashok, for assistance. The dynamics of the situation shifted when the group, initially consisting of girls, summoned a group of boys to the scene.

It was reported that approximately four to five individuals, including both girls and boys, proceeded to assault Basavaraj. They apparently used their hands and a nearby wooden stick as weapons, hitting him in various parts of his body, including his back, head, and nose, resulting in visible injuries and bleeding.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation

Upon the arrival of Ashok, who attempted to provide assistance, he too became a victim of the attack; the assailants allegedly struck him on the head as well. According to Basavaraj’s account, the group used derogatory language while threatening both men, asserting that they would not face any repercussions for their actions.

In light of these events, the Yelahanka New Town Police Station has registered a case based on the complaint from Basavaraj. The FIR includes charges against unknown individuals under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These charges encompass Sections 118(1) related to causing hurt with dangerous means, 126(2) concerning wrongful restraint, and other relevant sections pertaining to criminal intimidation and intentional insults.

Law enforcement agencies have indicated that an investigation into the incident is ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying the assailants involved. The situation has raised concerns regarding the safety of delivery agents working during late-night hours in urban areas.
