Kosovo’s acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti was targeted with eggs while addressing Parliament on Saturday, following his request for additional time to negotiate with rival parties. This incident underscores the ongoing political impasse that has left the Balkan nation without a stable government for nearly two years. Kurti had announced the need for more time to avoid a repeat of elections, which many fear could further destabilise the political landscape.

After addressing lawmakers, Kurti expressed the necessity of extending the negotiation period with other political factions. He stated, “We do not yet have a political agreement. Therefore, in order to avoid new elections, I asked for additional time to present the name of the Speaker of Parliament.” His statements were interrupted shortly thereafter by an outburst from MP Time Kadrijaj from the Alliance party, who threw eggs at him whilst chanting, “Shame, shame.”

The quick intervention of Kurti’s Vetevendosje party members and police personnel within the chamber helped to prevent the situation from escalating further and causing additional disturbances.

Political Landscape and Coalition Challenges

The incidence of egg throwing illustrates the intense political divisions in Kosovo. Kurti’s Vetevendosje party emerged victorious in the June snap parliamentary election, capturing 58 out of 120 seats in the Assembly. Despite this, the party requires support from several smaller minority parties to establish a functioning government. A significant hurdle remains the need for a two-thirds majority in Parliament for the election of the country’s president.

Negotiations to form a coalition government have been ongoing, specifically with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), which secured 18 seats in the same election. However, progress has reportedly stagnated due to disagreements over the presidency position, which the LDK insists must be included in any governing agreement. Kurti has consistently resisted these demands, leading to a deadlock.

This protracted stalemate is raising concerns about political stability in Kosovo. Without a resolution, the country remains in a state of uncertainty. Kurti emphasised the necessity of using the additional time to secure a workable agreement, highlighting the potential risks for the political future if elections are forced prematurely.
