His performance has significantly bolstered his case for the No. 3 batting position ahead of the forthcoming Test series. At the end of the day, India concluded their innings at 357 for 8, just six runs short of Sri Lanka’s first-innings score.

The absence of Sai Sudharsan, who has been ruled out of the series due to injury, posed a challenge regarding who would succeed in the pivotal No. 3 slot. Padikkal decisively answered this question, showcasing his skills with 18 boundaries, while anchoring India’s innings effectively on the second day in Colombo.

Day Two Highlights and Key Partnerships

Beginning Day 2, Padikkal walked to the crease after the early dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was out for a duck after just two balls. Responding to the early setback, the left-handed batsman settled in and gradually took command of the innings. He formed a vital partnership of 96 runs with Ravindra Jadeja, remaining at the crease long after others had departed.

Padikkal’s strokeplay, particularly through the off-side, proved effective as he balanced patience with an ongoing flow of runs. Unfortunately, Dhruv Jurel struggled to make an impact, falling for just one run, while Manav Suthar managed a solid contribution of 45 runs off 90 balls. His performance as a lower-order batsman added further options to the squad, owing to his dual role as a bowling all-rounder, which might be significant in the upcoming series.

Lower Order and Gurnoor’s Explosive Finish

India’s lower-order batsmen provided an explosive finish to the innings, particularly with Gurnoor Brar at the crease. He smashed an impressive unbeaten 36 runs off just 18 balls, which included two fours and four sixes. Brar particularly shone during the final over, launching sixes in a display of aggressive batting that energised the team’s total.

His barrage commenced with a slog sweep over deep mid-wicket, followed by another six struck directly back over the bowler. He capped the innings by stepping out and launching the final delivery for a six over extra cover, culminating a strong finish with India scoring 77 runs in the last ten overs without losing a wicket.

Shubman Gill, however, missed another day of play due to a blow to his right ring finger sustained during practice. KL Rahul continued to lead the team in Gill’s absence, with the management closely monitoring his fitness ahead of the Test series. With one more day of the warm-up match remaining, several Test hopefuls have already gained valuable time in the middle, contributing to team preparation.
