The recent completion of a bridge in Nawada village has marked a significant milestone for the local community, particularly in honour of the revolutionary martyr Thakur Roshan Singh. Known for his bravery, Singh was born on December 19, 1892, in Shahjahanpur district. His legacy has been overshadowed by decades of infrastructural neglect, as the village remained isolated from mainstream development long after India’s independence.

From a young age, Thakur Roshan Singh exhibited exceptional courage and athletic skills. He took part in Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement before evolving into a key member of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA). His actions during a protest in Bareilly in 1922, where he intercepted a British officer’s gun, led to his two-year imprisonment, cementing his role as a staunch opponent of British rule.

Singh’s actions continued to challenge colonial authority, notably during the HRA operation in Bamrauli village in December 1924. Despite the escalating tensions and a subsequent arrest following the Kakori train robbery in 1925, Singh remained a symbol of resistance, ultimately facing the death penalty for his affiliations and actions against the British government.

Infrastructure Improvement for Nawada Village

The absence of a reliable bridge over the Khannaut River had left Nawada village cut off for nearly five months each year, severely affecting residents’ access to essential services. Health care, education, and agricultural trade suffered as villagers struggled to navigate muddy and flooded paths during the monsoon season. This isolation persisted for three generations, indicating a long-standing issue that successive governments failed to address.

After Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath assumed office, the village’s plight was brought to his attention. In response to the community’s requests for a pontoon bridge, the Chief Minister approved the construction of a permanent bridge, along with additional projects for road improvements and the establishment of a degree college on February 25, 2018. This decision was part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure in Shahjahanpur.

On December 30, 2018, Yogi Adityanath personally inaugurated the bridge, marking a turning point for the villagers. He paid tribute to Singh at his ancestral home, connecting the community’s modern struggles to the sacrifice made by their historical hero. This event was laden with emotional significance, as it symbolised the long-awaited recognition of Thakur Roshan Singh’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle, and an acknowledgment of the village’s historical neglect.

Impact on Daily Life in Nawada

The completion of the bridge has transformed daily life in Nawada and surrounding areas. Now, ambulances can swiftly reach patients, ensuring timely medical assistance, while students benefit from improved access to educational institutions. Farmers can transport their produce to markets without facing lengthy delays, thereby improving economic conditions in the region.

The establishment of a degree college in the village further enhances educational opportunities, serving as a beacon of inspiration for the younger generation to honour Singh’s legacy. With developments around the martyr’s home being converted into a memorial, the community is not only acknowledging past sacrifices but also instilling a sense of patriotism in newer generations.
