Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan visited the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on August 8, 2026, to pay homage to the freedom fighters who faced immense suffering during India’s independence movement. Radhakrishnan laid a wreath at the Martyr’s Column, a significant location within the jail, to honour the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country’s freedom.

During his visit, he also paid tribute at the cell of Veer Savarkar, a prominent figure in the struggle for independence. The Vice-President’s actions included a comprehensive tour of the facilities, including Swatantra Jyoti, the Central Tower, Gallows, and the Museum and Exhibition Gallery, which offers insights into the history of the freedom struggle. He attended a Light and Sound Show that depicted various events of this pivotal period in Indian history.

Recollections of Veer Savarkar’s Legacy

While addressing attendees, Radhakrishnan described Veer Savarkar as a unique revolutionary whose unwavering patriotism inspired numerous generations. He recalled the hardships Savarkar endured during his imprisonment at the Cellular Jail, asserting that the British Raj sought to demoralise freedom fighters like Savarkar; however, he noted that Savarkar maintained his resolve. According to Radhakrishnan, it was ultimately the British government that became demoralised.

Further elaborating on Savarkar’s contributions, the Vice-President underscored his efforts in combatting untouchability and social discrimination in India. Radhakrishnan stated that the fight for freedom was intertwined with the struggle against societal injustices, marking Savarkar’s role as pivotal in both areas.

The Vice-President expressed the view that India’s quest for empowerment and strength is not geared towards imposing its will on others, but rather ensuring that the nation is not dictated by any external force. He emphasised that Savarkar’s sacrifices would continue to serve as a beacon of inspiration for future generations.

Official Welcome and Ongoing Visit Programme

Prior to his visit to Cellular Jail, Radhakrishnan was welcomed at INS Utkrosh in Sri Vijaya Puram by Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi (Retd.), the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Vice-President received a ceremonial Guard of Honour upon his arrival, reflecting the significance of his visit.

Radhakrishnan’s visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands spans two days and includes several engagements aimed at fostering national pride. Among these activities is the launch of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, which promotes the display of the national flag in homes across the country. Additionally, he is scheduled to visit Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, further highlighting his commitment to commemorating the contributions of Indian leaders in the independence movement.

This visit by the Vice-President underscores the importance of reflecting on India’s storied history of resistance and resilience in the face of colonial rule. Radhakrishnan’s tribute not only recognises the valour of independence fighters but also serves to inspire current and future generations about the significance of freedom and equality in India.
