Indian Railways Enhances Passenger Safety Using AI, Drones and CCTV

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Railways is set to implement significant technological upgrades aimed at bolstering passenger safety throughout its network. This initiative will see an increased utilisation of artificial intelligence, drones, and CCTV surveillance systems to enhance security at both stations and within trains. This decision reportedly follows recent security apprehensions related to incidents involving anti-social elements located in and around railway premises.

Officials stated that the deployment of advanced monitoring technologies is designed not only to detect potential hazards more efficiently but also to foster a safer environment for passengers. In conjunction with these technological advancements, the Railways has advised travellers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly by using the dedicated helpline number 139.

The new safety strategy is expected to facilitate quicker intelligence gathering processes, improve coordination among various agencies, and strengthen cyber security measures across the nation’s rail services.

AI and Drones Key to Enhanced Surveillance

According to railway officials, the proactive application of artificial intelligence and drones will significantly improve the tracking of unusual movements and real-time monitoring at stations as well as along railway routes. The scope of CCTV coverage is also anticipated to broaden, thereby enhancing overall security within the railway network.

This safety review was a focal point during a high-level meeting convened by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi. Participants included officials from various railway zones who collectively discussed strategies to upgrade security protocols across the entire organisation.

Emphasising the collaborative nature of safety measures, the Railway Ministry indicated that an amalgamation of community vigilance and technological innovations will play a critical role in achieving the desired safety outcomes.

Passenger Vigilance and Reporting Encouraged

Indian Railways has urged passengers to play a proactive role in security enhancements during their journeys. Travellers have been advised to report any unattended baggage, suspicious behaviour, or irregular activities at railway stations and on trains through the helpline number 139. This call for vigilance is part of a broader strategy aimed at fostering a shared responsibility for safety among passengers and railway staff.

Officials highlighted that ongoing investigations into various railway incidents have suggested possible links to anti-social elements, thus reinforcing the emphasis on preventive monitoring and intelligence capabilities. This also reflects a shift towards empowering passengers to assist in maintaining a secure environment.

By integrating community participation into security frameworks, the Railways aims to enhance overall safety measures and ensure a more seamless travel experience for everyone involved.

Focus on Cybersecurity and Interagency Collaboration

In addition to enhancing physical surveillance, the Railways is also prioritising the development of robust cybersecurity measures. Improved collaboration between the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police is part of this comprehensive approach. Enhanced information sharing among various departmental entities is expected to expedite responses to any security threats that may arise.

The integration of technology-driven monitoring systems will be rolled out in phases as part of the broader security enhancement plan for Indian Railways. Officials noted that these developments represent a commitment to adopting innovative solutions for safeguarding passengers and maintaining a high level of security across the railway system.

Overall, these strategic initiatives reflect Indian Railways’ dedication to evolving its safety protocols to meet contemporary challenges, ensuring that passenger safety is the utmost priority in rail travel across the country.
