Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party and Lok Sabha MP, has expressed concern regarding the Centre’s handling of an alleged examination paper leak and the recent police actions during the Citizen for Justice and Peace (CJP) protest in New Delhi. He addressed reporters at Parliament, emphasising that the government is responsible for maintaining the integrity of educational assessments. Yadav stated that the authorities have failed to prevent incidents of paper leaks and questioned the effectiveness of the ruling party in managing these issues.

During his remarks, Yadav described the actions taken against protesters as excessive, asserting that students faced undue aggression from law enforcement. He highlighted the severity of police responses, alleging that forceful measures, such as tear gas and electric shocks, were used against peaceful demonstrators. His statements raised concerns about the government’s commitment to its stated principles of inclusivity and development.

Concerns Over Political Motivations for Resignation

Yadav further scrutinised the government regarding the resignation of the Union Education Minister, suggesting that political manoeuvring was preventing any accountability. He claimed that the lack of pressure for the Minister’s resignation was due to fears that such an action could unearth troubling information. Yadav remarked on the unprecedented nature of the government’s behaviour since the country’s independence, reflecting upon his disbelief at the current situation.

On the same day, Union Health Minister JP Nadda visited the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital to meet individuals injured during the police action related to the protest on Monday. His visit included interactions with the victims and consultations with medical staff to assess the care being administered to those affected. The Union Minister left after reviewing the conditions of the injured individuals in the hospital.

Leaders of the opposition, such as Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also visited the injured protesters, reinforcing the political ramifications of the police response to the demonstration. Complications arising from the protest have led to increased scrutiny of government policies and the handling of dissenting voices.

Details on Protest Violence and Hospital Treatment

The protest march led by CJP, aimed at Parliament, turned violent, resulting in injuries to both demonstrators and police personnel. Reports indicate that over one hundred police officers sustained injuries amid the clashes, while approximately sixty protesters were also harmed. According to law enforcement, protesters allegedly engaged in stone-pelting and attempted to breach police barricades, damaging vehicles and public property in the process.

In response, police have lodged First Information Reports (FIRs) against unidentified individuals in relation to reported vandalism and violence in areas such as Connaught Place and Parliament Street. The CJP delegation had previously met with Health Minister Nadda, voicing demands that included the Education Minister’s resignation and compensation measures for families of NEET students who have lost their lives.

Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist undergoing medical care at Safdarjung Hospital after a hunger strike, remains in a stable condition. Although his blood sugar levels are reportedly low, he is receiving necessary treatment. Wangchuk was taken to the hospital on July 18 following his protest against the Education Minister related to the examination paper leak. Medical professionals continue to monitor his health as he declines certain forms of medical interventions despite recommendations.
