Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party, has publicly questioned who is responsible for the alleged theft of donations collected for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. During a press conference on August 10, Yadav expressed concern over the issue, emphasising that the misappropriation of funds is not just a trivial matter but one that affects the faith of millions of individuals. He noted that the theft of offerings to Lord Ram raises significant questions regarding accountability.

Yadav’s statements came in the context of ongoing discussions around the government’s reluctance to address these critical issues, particularly concerning the handling of students’ protests. He pointed out that the government has so far failed to provide a statement from the Home Minister regarding the concerns raised by the opposition parties, despite the limited time left in the parliamentary session.

Protests Erupt Over Police Action Against Students

Accompanying Yadav during the protest at Makar Dwar in the Parliament complex were other Opposition leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party MPs Dharmendra Yadav and Awadhesh Prasad. Their demonstration was primarily aimed at condemning the alleged excessive use of force by police during protests that took place on July 20, as well as addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding the donations for the Ram Mandir.

RJD MP Manoj Jha joined in the criticism of the government’s response, describing it as an embodiment of “obstinacy and insensitivity.” He cited instances of excessive force used against students, including allegations that pellet guns were deployed and that police used lathis embedded with nails to suppress the protests. Jha emphasised that these actions, combined with the issue of stolen donations, warrant immediate attention from the government.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has countered the opposition’s claims, asserting that the government is ready for a comprehensive discussion on issues relating to students. He urged the opposition to permit the Home Minister a chance to respond and partake in the debate. Rijiju insisted that the disruptive behaviour of opposition members should not obstruct the parliamentary process.

Call for Legislative Cooperation

In a related remark, JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha accused the opposition of intentionally stalling parliamentary proceedings, criticising their apparent disinterest in discussing issues raised by the government. Jha asserted that their approach seems focused more on disruption than fostering a constructive dialogue within the legislature.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla made an impassioned appeal during a Business Advisory Committee meeting, urging political parties to collaborate in ensuring the smooth function of Parliament. He emphasised the importance of addressing key public issues during sessions and called for the House to hear the voices of citizens during the ongoing Monsoon Session, which is set to conclude on August 13.

As discussions continue, the stalemate over demands for Amit Shah’s statement regarding the police’s actions and the debated issue of Ram Mandir donations has repeatedly obstructed proceedings in both Houses of Parliament. This situation reflects ongoing tensions between the government and opposition parties, indicating a challenging atmosphere as the session nears its end.
