Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is promoting the concept of a “double-engine government” as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign for the West Bengal Assembly elections. Speaking to a crowd in Bolpur on April 16, he highlighted the successful development initiatives undertaken in Uttar Pradesh under BJP leadership. Adityanath asserted that the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya exemplifies the progress made in the state, positioning it as a cornerstone of the BJP’s achievements.

Adityanath claimed that the opposition parties, including the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), lack the ability to replicate this development model. He stated, “Can anyone stop it? They cannot match the speed of the double engine,” suggesting that the BJP government has established a positive atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh compared to the alleged turmoil under the current TMC administration in West Bengal.

Criticism of TMC Governance

Diving deeper into the political context, Adityanath did not hold back his criticism of the incumbent TMC government, accusing it of fostering an environment characterised by corruption, fear, and unrest. He urged the electorate to support the BJP in restoring stability and governance in West Bengal, claiming, “All of them will be seen sweeping the streets of Bengal” if the BJP is elected. His remarks aimed to rally support by contrasting BJP policies with those of the current administration.

Additionally, in a previous rally in Paschim Bardhaman, Adityanath addressed the issues of crime and hooliganism that he stated have plagued West Bengal. He referred to a pervasive identity crisis and alleged that the TMC’s rule has enabled a rise in criminal activities, positioning the BJP as a solution to these long-standing challenges. He asserted, “This mafia tendency will be ended by the BJP,” signalling a clear commitment to law and order under a potential BJP government.

Adityanath drew parallels between West Bengal’s situation and that of Uttar Pradesh nine years ago, where he claimed similar conditions prevailed. He recalled an era marked by riots and rampant crime while emphasising that a BJP-led government effectively transformed Uttar Pradesh into a stable state. His narrative suggests strong confidence in the potential for positive change in West Bengal should the BJP come to power.

Upcoming Election Schedule and Context

The elections in West Bengal are set to occur in two phases on April 23 and 29, with results expected to be announced on May 4. The context for this election follows a significant battle in 2021, when the TMC achieved a commanding victory, securing 213 seats. However, the BJP has experienced notable growth, rising from a minor political force to obtaining 77 seats in the previous election cycle, while Congress and Left parties failed to secure any seats.
