The Indian Railways has granted approval for a significant multitracking project estimated at Rs 976 crore, which will enhance the capacity of the 29 km stretch between Danapur and Fatuha in Bihar. This initiative aims to address congestion on a highly trafficked segment of the Patna rail corridor, facilitating an increase in both passenger and freight services. The project is a crucial step towards improving the overall efficiency of rail operations in the region.

The construction will involve laying additional railway lines that are classified as the third and fourth track. These lines will extend from Danapur to Patna, from Rajendra Nagar to Patna Saheb, and between Patna Saheb and Fatuha. The introduction of these additional lines is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion, reduce delays, and enhance overall punctuality in train schedules.

Upon completion, the project is projected to allow for twenty-two additional passenger trains and eighteen additional freight trains to operate daily. It is also expected to accommodate an additional 5.2 million tonnes of freight annually, which will play a vital role in boosting the local economy through improved logistical moves.

Impact on Regional Transport and Economy

This multitracking project is part of a broader quadrupling initiative along the Delhi, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Patna, Kiul, Bhagalpur, Khanna, and Howrah route. Such developments are critical as they cater to regions identified under the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor of the Indian Railways. The infrastructure improvements will not only enhance rail connectivity but also support industrial growth and the transportation of essential commodities throughout the region.

In addition, this strengthened railway section is vital for the upcoming 2120 MW thermal power plant located in Chausa, Buxar district. The operation of this power plant will rely significantly on rail transport for the movement of bulk inputs necessary for its functioning, thus further emphasising the importance of this project for regional energy supply and stability.

The Indian Railways’ commitment to expanding capacities on high-density routes helps improve logistics for both the energy sector and other industries, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of Bihar. This ongoing development underscores the importance of rail transport as a backbone for economic growth in the state.

Safety Improvements by Indian Railways

In conjunction with infrastructure development, the Indian Railways has reported notable improvements in safety measures over recent years. The organisation has successfully reduced train accidents by eighty-eight per cent over the past twelve years. A report indicated that there were only sixteen consequential train accidents recorded in 2025-2026, a significant decrease from 135 incidents in the 2014-15 period.

As of June 2026-27, only two consequential train accidents have been reported, which highlights the effectiveness of the measures implemented by Indian Railways to ensure passenger and freight safety. Efficient tracking, improved signalling systems, and enhancements to existing infrastructure have contributed to this positive trend in safety statistics.

This focus on safety, along with capacity expansion and infrastructure improvement, reinforces Indian Railways’ dedication to fostering reliable and efficient rail transport across the nation.
