Apple May Increase Prices for iPhone 18 Pro Ahead of September Launch

The CSR Journal Magazine

The anticipated launch of the iPhone 18 Pro series is drawing closer, and reports indicate a potential increase in retail prices. Recent analyses suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could see price hikes ranging from $250 to $300 (approximately Rs 23,800 to Rs 28,600) compared to the iPhone 17 Pro models. If realised, this would represent one of the largest price increases for Apple’s flagship smartphones in recent years.

Currently, the starting price for the iPhone 17 Pro is $1,099, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199. The expected increase would elevate the new models into a higher price category, which could significantly impact consumer purchasing decisions.

Factors Behind the Price Increases

The anticipated price hike is reportedly driven by several factors, primarily increasing production costs. Apple is expected to implement TSMC’s latest 2nm A20 chip, which is projected to be more expensive to manufacture than the current 3nm processors. Furthermore, rising DRAM and NAND memory prices, coupled with ongoing global component shortages attributed to the surge in artificial intelligence technology, are also contributing to the higher costs.

Jeff Pu, a prominent analyst at GF Securities, has indicated that these factors may compel Apple to raise its prices. However, he also cautioned that such a move might lead to “demand uncertainty” among potential buyers. This represents a shift from Pu’s earlier stance, when he suggested in May that Apple might pursue competitive pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup despite rising component costs.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook did not provide any specifics regarding iPhone pricing during the company’s most recent earnings call. While he acknowledged the rising costs of components, he refrained from disclosing any pricing strategies for upcoming models.

Anticipated Features and Upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro

Beyond the expected price increase, the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series is said to be featuring several hardware enhancements. The Pro and Pro Max models are rumoured to maintain their respective display sizes of 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, although a smaller Dynamic Island may be introduced due to adjustments in the Face ID technology.

Improvements in camera technology are also anticipated, with speculations pointing to a new variable aperture system. This feature could enable the camera to adapt the amount of light entering the lens, enhancing both low-light photography and performance in brightly lit environments.

The performance of the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to benefit significantly from the A20 processor being developed using TSMC’s advanced 2nm process. Reports suggest that this chip will incorporate new packaging technology that makes memory and processing components work more efficiently, leading to faster speeds and improved energy efficiency.

Additionally, the Pro Max variant may include a slightly larger battery, and Apple is anticipated to introduce its proprietary C2 modem, which promises enhanced connectivity and better power management features.

Launch Timeline and Future Releases

Speculations indicate that Apple may reveal the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, along with its inaugural foldable iPhone, during an event scheduled for around September 12, 2026. Other models, including the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2, are likely to be unveiled in spring 2027.

As of now, Apple has not confirmed any of these details officially. Until the September event takes place, all pricing, features, and launch timelines remain speculative.
