Pakistan has documented a significant rise in terrorism-related incidents throughout the year 2026, with a total of 3,145 reported cases, according to military spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry. During these attacks, 819 individuals lost their lives, among whom were security personnel. This alarming statistic was presented at a press conference held in Islamabad on Friday.

Chaudhry provided a breakdown of the incidents by region, indicating that the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were particularly affected. He reported that 1,971 incidents occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while Balochistan recorded 1,148, with an additional 26 incidents reported from other regions of the country.

Highlighting the military’s response, Chaudhry noted that during the same period, 2,084 alleged terrorists were killed, amounting to an average of ten per day. He stated that this is the highest rate recorded to date, suggesting an intensified military focus on combating extremism.

Concerns About Balochistan and Governance

During the briefing, Chaudhry addressed concerns regarding the security situation in Balochistan, addressing claims that conditions in the province were worsening. He argued that there are efforts to create a perception of a deteriorating situation and cited systemic issues, including elitism and the tribal Sardari system, as significant barriers to progress in the area.

The spokesperson pointed out that these entrenched structures have hindered educational and economic advancements since Pakistan’s independence in 1947, emphasising the need for reform. He asserted that a genuine improvement in governance is critical to enhancing stability in the country.

Further discussing the military’s prior declarations regarding establishing Pakistan as a “hard state,” Chaudhry clarified that such a state would entail equal application of the constitution and laws, rather than military dominance. He emphasized the importance of engaging with the actual stakeholders in Balochistan rather than appeasing external influences.

Criticism of the Afghan Regime

In his address, Chaudhry also voiced strong criticism of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, alleging that the authority relies on terrorism to sustain its economy and diplomatic relations. He lamented that terrorism has become a focal point of the Afghan regime’s policies.

Chaudhry’s remarks included a claim about the terrorist connections between India and Afghanistan, although he provided no evidence to substantiate this assertion. This declaration was made amidst a broader critique of the Afghan government’s approach to governance and stability in the region.
