Xi Jinping Proposes Collaborative Vision Between China and US

The CSR Journal Magazine

During a state banquet held in Beijing on May 14, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed a welcoming tone towards US President Donald Trump. Xi suggested that the goals of China’s “great rejuvenation” and Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda could align as both nations aim to foster a more stable bilateral relationship. During the evening, he referred to the connection between China and the United States as the most significant bilateral relationship in contemporary times.

In his remarks during a toast, Xi underscored the importance of cooperation, stating that both nations “must make it work and never mess it up.” He emphasised that the citizens of both countries are remarkable and that their respective national aspirations could progress alongside each other, thereby contributing to global well-being.

Xi repeatedly called for collaboration, arguing that both countries could reap the benefits of cooperation while facing negative consequences from confrontation. He highlighted that mutual respect is essential for the advancement of any relationship, declaring that the two powers should act as partners instead of rivals.

Dialogue on Strategic Stability

During the event, Xi provided insights into the discussions he had previously held with Trump, noting that they had engaged in extensive exchanges on both bilateral and international issues. Xi revealed that they had reached an agreement to work towards building a constructive China-US relationship characterised by strategic stability. This agreement aims to promote the steady and sustainable development of relations between the two nations.

In response to Xi’s cordial remarks, President Trump extended an invitation for Xi to visit the White House on September 24. This invitation underscores the willingness of both leaders to continue dialogues aimed at strengthening their partnership.

Reflecting on the shared history of the two nations, Trump highlighted the long-standing relationship between the American and Chinese people, tracing it back to the founding of America. He mentioned the arrival of the first American consul, Samuel Shaw, in 1784 as a significant point in this enduring connection.

Historical Connections Highlighted

Trump recalled that the relationship has evolved over two and a half centuries into a crucial global partnership. He noted a historical gift presented by Chinese admirers of George Washington, which is a stone tablet located at the Washington Monument. This tablet features the laudatory words of a Chinese official who described Washington as a ‘hero among men’.

In his remarks, Trump praised the shared values between the countries, which include hard work, courage, and achievement. He affirmed the substantial global impact of their partnership, stating that “the world is a special world with the two of us united and together.” Trump’s sentiments echo a mutual recognition of the significant role this bilateral relationship plays on the global stage.

As both leaders concluded the evening, the emphasis on collaboration and history served to reinforce the importance of nurturing ties between their respective nations. This gathering reflects a desire to seek common ground, paving the way for a potentially more cooperative future between the two largest economies in the world.
