US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would be “disappointed” if China supplied weapons to Iran, saying Chinese President Xi Jinping had personally assured him that Beijing would not provide military support to Tehran.

Trump’s remarks came amid reports that Iran could receive a shipment of Chinese-made shoulder-fired missiles in the coming weeks, adding to growing concerns over military support for Tehran.

Trump Cites Xi’s Assurances

Speaking to reporters during an Oval Office interaction, Trump said reports of China supplying weapons to Iran would come as a surprise.

“That would be surprising. He told me very strongly he wouldn’t partake, and he knows I’d be quite disappointed,” Trump said, referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

According to reports, intelligence assessments suggest Beijing is preparing to supply Iran with new air defence systems as Tehran seeks to replenish military equipment following recent regional hostilities.

Trump recalled meeting Xi in Beijing earlier this year and said the Chinese leader had given him a clear commitment that China would not arm Iran.

Warning to China and Russia

Trump’s remarks follow warnings he issued last week to both China and Russia against supplying weapons to Iran.

On his Truth Social platform, the US President said he believed neither Beijing nor Moscow was currently providing military assistance to Tehran.

“If they did, it would be very bad for them. Certainly not in their best interests,” Trump wrote.

The comments come as US authorities continue to examine reports that Russian and Chinese intelligence networks may have provided targeting information to Iran following attacks on American military facilities in the region.

Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin had also assured him that Moscow was not supplying weapons to Iran.

He added that Putin understood the US approach towards military assistance, noting that Washington sells weapons to NATO member countries rather than directly supplying Ukraine.

“President Xi said he will not partake, and President Putin said the same thing,” Trump told reporters.

Reiterating his confidence in both leaders, Trump said he trusted their assurances and did not believe either country would want to jeopardise relations with the United States by arming Iran.
