Who Is Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung? Inside the Resignation That’s Shaking Nepal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sudan Gurung, who recently stepped down as Nepal’s Home Minister, has suddenly become the focus of intense political attention following his resignation amid allegations of financial misconduct. Gurung was considered a key figure in Nepal’s internal security and administrative framework, holding significant influence over law enforcement and domestic policy decisions. His exit comes at a sensitive time, raising questions about transparency and accountability within the government.

The controversy is reportedly linked to a money laundering investigation, which has triggered widespread debate across political circles and among the public. While details of the allegations are still emerging, the situation has already created ripples in Nepal’s political landscape, with opposition leaders demanding deeper probes and clarity on the matter. Gurung’s resignation is being seen as an attempt to prevent further political damage to the ruling establishment, but it has also intensified scrutiny over governance standards.

As the investigation unfolds, the focus will remain on whether more officials are implicated and how authorities handle the case. For now, Gurung’s departure marks a significant moment in Nepal’s politics, highlighting ongoing concerns around financial integrity and institutional accountability.

Details Surrounding His Resignation

Gurung’s resignation surfaced following controversy over his reported shareholdings in companies affiliated with businessman Deepak Bhatta, who is under investigation for a money laundering case. Recent disclosures indicated that Gurung held investments in Star Micro Insurance and Liberty Micro Insurance, firms allegedly linked to Bhatta, according to reports from The Kathmandu Post.

He acknowledged the ongoing public discourse regarding his financial disclosures, stating that these debates influenced his decision to resign. The political atmosphere in Nepal is particularly charged at this time, with ongoing protests related to customs enforcement at the India-Nepal border and discussions about separating student unions from political entities.

At the age of 38, Gurung gained prominence following the Gen Z protests in September last year and subsequently won a parliamentary seat in the Gorkha-1 constituency during the general elections held on March 5. He submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who is commonly known as Balen Shah.

Investigation and Controversy Over Financial Disclosures

Gurung previously denied any wrongdoing, affirming his willingness to cooperate with authorities. Earlier this week, he addressed what he termed as unfounded rumours and urged the public to differentiate between allegations and verified facts. He contended that his investments were declared assets acquired prior to his tenure in office and maintained that possessing shares in a company does not imply a direct affiliation with all associated individuals.

Notably, Gurung pointed out that the investigation of Bhatta is being conducted by the Department of Money Laundering Investigation under the Finance Ministry, rather than the Home Ministry, thus rejecting allegations of institutional conflict within governmental departments.

Questions over Gurung’s asset declaration intensified after reports indicated that investments amounting to approximately 2.5 million Nepali rupees each in the two insurance firms were not disclosed separately. He clarified that these holdings were part of a broader declaration of over 27 million Nepali rupees in securities investments. The controversy prompted further scrutiny, particularly since the companies in question are not publicly traded, raising concerns regarding how the shares were classified.

Gurung’s resignation marks a significant moment as it constitutes the second ministerial exit within the Shah government, following the earlier dismissal of former Labour Minister Deepak Kumar Sah due to his party’s recommendation for disciplinary action over accusations of misusing his office.
