Elephant Kills Four Members of Same Family in Nepal Over 14 Years

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic situation unfolded for a family in Nepal, as they experienced a devastating encounter with a rogue elephant that had previously claimed the lives of their loved ones. The incident highlights the severe risks associated with human-elephant interactions, particularly in regions surrounding Chitwan National Park.

The series of events began in December 2012, when Shanichara Bote lost his parents to a rogue elephant named Dhurbe in Madi, located near Chitwan National Park. In light of this tragedy, the family decided to relocate approximately nine miles away, moving to Jagatpur across the Rapti River, believing that this would ensure their safety from future encounters. For many years, Bote’s family felt a sense of relief in their new home, feeling they had escaped the dangers associated with Dhurbe.

However, this peace was shattered earlier this month. Reports indicate that Dhurbe returned to the family’s residence in Jagatpur, resulting in the deaths of Bote’s 25-year-old daughter-in-law, Ashika Bote, and his four-year-old grandson, Bharat Bote. Expressing deep sorrow, Bote remarked, “We believed that moving across the major rivers would keep us safe. But after all these years, the exact same elephant found us again, raided our home and took my daughter-in-law and my little grandson. There is nowhere left for us to run.”

Concerning Statistics on Human-Elephant Conflict

The heart-wrenching incident marks a significant and tragic statistic: four members of the same family have now fallen victim to Dhurbe over a span of nearly 14 years. This rogue elephant has gained notoriety in Nepal, being linked to numerous fatal attacks since at least 2010. Chitwan National Park officials indicate that Dhurbe is responsible for a total of 25 confirmed human fatalities during this period.

Before this recent incident, Dhurbe had already been linked to 23 human deaths. Abinash Thapa Magar from Chitwan National Park confirmed that the confirmed fatalities attributed to this elephant have risen to 25 following the latest tragic events. The reach of this rogue elephant’s history can also be found on various information platforms, including a dedicated Wikipedia page detailing these fatal incidents.

Following numerous attacks, wildlife authorities have actively monitored Dhurbe to mitigate the chances of further incidents. In 2016, the elephant was equipped with a tracking collar to assist in this monitoring. However, the initial collar malfunctioned, prompting the installation of another collar in 2020 and a subsequent replacement in 2023. Despite these measures, the ongoing conflict highlights the persistent vulnerabilities faced by both humans and wildlife in these regions.

Impact on Wildlife and Human Relations

This tragic occurrence amplifies the ongoing discussion regarding human-elephant conflicts in Nepal, a situation exacerbated by the encroachment of human settlements on traditional wildlife habitats. As urban areas expand and wildlife corridors diminish, encounters between humans and elephants like Dhurbe are increasingly common, leading to tragic consequences for communities.

The growing tension surrounding human-wildlife interactions necessitates urgent discussions about effective management strategies to reduce the risks for both parties. Authorities and conservationists face the challenge of balancing the need for human safety with the preservation of wildlife populations, especially in ecologically sensitive areas like Chitwan National Park.

As communities grapple with the reality of living alongside wildlife, the hope remains that solutions can be found to promote peaceful coexistence, safeguarding both human lives and the dignity of these majestic creatures. The heartbreak of Shanichara Bote’s family serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities facing Nepal as it navigates this critical issue.
