Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, expressed appreciation for the Delhi High Court’s ruling ordering his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital. Angmo stated that Wangchuk’s situation at the hospital felt like “detention,” asserting that his condition did not warrant hospitalisation. Instead, she argued that regular health monitoring could have taken place at Jantar Mantar, where he initially began his protest.

Angmo further claimed that the manner of Wangchuk’s admission gave rise to worries regarding his freedom and well-being. “We are more concerned about his health than the government,” she remarked, highlighting her belief that his health parameters were stable and not life-threatening.

Continuing Hunger Strike in Solidarity with Students

Following the court’s order, Wangchuk is set to continue his hunger strike as a gesture of solidarity with students who allegedly faced violence during protests. Angmo noted that her husband remained determined to persist with the fast, emphasizing the need for attention to the students’ grievances. She stated, “Sonam has decided to continue the hunger strike until Parliament listens to them.”

On the developments surrounding his hospital stay, Angmo revealed that multiple Members of Parliament had attempted to visit Wangchuk but were denied access. She termed the situation at Safdarjung Hospital as one that evoked feelings of containment, raising concerns about the limitations placed on communication with external parties.

After the court’s decision, Angmo mentioned that Wangchuk would be moved to Medanta Hospital following the issuance of a written order, expected after the midday meal. She reiterated her husband’s commitment to the hunger strike as essential for advocating on behalf of the affected students.

Judicial Review Over Medical Supervision Concerns

The Delhi High Court’s decision came after reviewing the appeal filed by Angmo, who sought her husband’s transfer to a private facility of his choosing. A bench consisting of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia considered the specific concerns laid out in Wangchuk’s correspondence regarding his treatment.

The court consulted medical records and engaged with doctors from AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital to assess Wangchuk’s needs. The consensus among the medical professionals was that continuous monitoring was critical for his health condition. The bench took these recommendations into account while deciding on the transfer.

As the proceedings unfolded, attention was drawn to the atmosphere in which Wangchuk was being treated, with Angmo stressing her apprehensions about his welfare. The court’s ruling, while permitting the transfer, aimed to ensure that Wangchuk receives the necessary medical attention in a suitable environment.
