WhatsApp has announced a significant update enabling users to register their accounts directly on an iPad. Previously, the iPad operated solely in companion mode, necessitating a link to an iPhone or Android device via a QR code. This new feature marks a substantial shift, allowing the iPad to serve as a primary device for WhatsApp users.

Before examining this development, it is important to understand companion mode. While useful for many, this mode has inherent limitations. Users could not share live locations, create or view broadcast lists, or engage with businesses through WhatsApp Flows. Additionally, the app would log out from all linked devices, including the iPad, if the primary phone was inactive for 14 consecutive days.

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the updated feature is gradually being rolled out alongside WhatsApp’s latest update for iPadOS, version 26.25.74, enhancing user experience significantly.

Features of Primary Device Support

Setting up WhatsApp on an iPad as a primary device mirrors the process used for smartphones. Users are required to enter their country code and phone number before waiting for a six-digit verification code. For those who have established a passkey for their account, this can replace the verification code, expediting the login process while providing an added layer of security.

Once the iPad is registered as the primary device, users will enjoy a range of expanded functionalities. The restrictions associated with companion mode will no longer apply, allowing full access to live location sharing, broadcast lists, and eliminating the previous risk of being logged out due to inactivity on the primary phone.

Continued Availability of Companion Mode
