WhatsApp has revealed a significant enhancement for its calling capabilities. Users can now initiate and receive both voice and video calls directly through their web browser. This announcement was made by CEO Kunal Shah on X, where he made a humorous remark aimed at Chrome users who typically have numerous tabs open. He stated, “WhatsApp calls now work in your browser. Your 47 open Chrome tabs finally got company that’s actually useful.”

Enhanced Calling Experience on Web

The introduction of browser-based calling is accompanied by a new call transfer feature, which enables users to switch an ongoing group call between devices without interruption. Previously, making a WhatsApp call on a desktop required a separate application. This update allows users to make one-on-one and group audio or video calls directly from WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need for the desktop application.

According to WhatsApp, the new features cater particularly to those who use shared computers, work laptops that restrict application installations, or individuals who prefer the ease of using a web browser. The newly introduced calling functions maintain the same end-to-end encryption that users expect from the mobile and desktop versions of the app.

Additionally, WhatsApp has confirmed that browser-based calls will include several familiar features, such as screen sharing, emoji reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab, as well as access to call history and favourite contacts directly from the web interface. This means users can enjoy a comprehensive calling experience without compromising on privacy.

Call Transfer Feature for Greater Flexibility

In conjunction with browser calling, the call transfer function allows users to relocate an active group conversation from one device to another seamlessly. For instance, a user can commence a group call on their mobile device while on the go and then transfer it to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app upon returning home for a larger viewing experience.

The capability works in reverse too, permitting users to revert to a mobile device if necessary. This added flexibility aims to enhance user experience, ensuring that conversations remain uninterrupted regardless of the device being used.

The rollout of these new features is in progress and is set to reach users over the coming days. With this expansion, WhatsApp aims to further enhance its calling ecosystem, enabling seamless connectivity across multiple devices and improving overall communication efficiency.
