Iranians are sensing unease as US President Donald Trump continues to issue inconsistent statements regarding military action and diplomatic negotiations with Iran. The conflicting messages have led many to feel overwhelmed by the unpredictability of the situation. One individual, Faezeh, a 27-year-old employee of a financial firm in Tehran, remarked that while the president’s comments influence their daily lives, she has chosen to focus on her own wellbeing instead.

This month has marked the war’s six-month anniversary, with many citizens opting to disengage from constant news alerts in an effort to safeguard their mental health. As the threat of a significant US military response surfaced again, many found their concerns diminished compared to earlier warnings. Back in April, Trump forewarned that “a whole civilisation will die tonight,” only to announce a ceasefire shortly thereafter.

Roham, a colleague of Faezeh, attributed the issue to the current dynamics of leadership. He noted that while previous US presidents spoke less yet took decisive action, Trump’s abundant use of social media diversifies and sensationalises his communication, often leading to inaction. He remarked on the Israeli government’s reluctance to create an environment that could facilitate more voices in Iran and expressed doubt over any future improvements.

Economic Concerns Further Complicate the Situation

The ongoing instability has left many citizens apprehensive about the economic ramifications. Faezeh expressed her fears that the currency situation could deteriorate further, highlighting the rial’s alarming status. On the open market, the rial was trading at approximately 1.91 million against the US dollar, near its historical low.

In mid-June, the currency had slightly recovered to around 1.54 million against the dollar, thanks to a now-defunct deal between Iran and the US facilitated by regional interlocutors. This sudden fluctuation has exacerbated inflation, which the Statistical Centre of Iran has reported at nearly 90 per cent for the month ending July 22, compared to the same period the previous year.

Ali, a product manager in Tehran, remarked that he believes Trump largely focuses on stock market behaviour and oil prices when formulating his strategy. He theorised that significant action, such as attacking energy infrastructure, would likely be postponed until after the upcoming US congressional elections in November. Ali speculated that Trump’s approach is more of a calculated game rather than a commitment to actual military confrontation.

Negotiations and Domestic Reactions Amidst Tensions

Amidst expressions of war from the US, Trump announced plans for mediated discussions with Iranian representatives, although Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that negotiations regarding the Strait of Hormuz would be conducted with Oman, not the US. This has raised eyebrows domestically, with state television questioning the validity of US claims.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that he is often surprised by the Iranian public’s reliance on US statements, which he labelled as consistently unfounded. He reaffirmed the nation’s adherence to its established principles, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz and its nuclear programme, rejecting any notion of significant concessions.

As public sentiment remains divided, state media have been advising citizens to prepare for a potential escalation of conflict. Analysts on state television have projected possible US strategies aimed at destabilising the Iranian regime should conflicts escalate significantly.

Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, recently reiterated support for diplomatic agreements, suggesting that previous accords could serve as a foundation for future negotiations. However, Trump countered that any progress would depend on Iran’s willingness to engage constructively, emphasising a need for a comprehensive agreement that addresses longstanding tensions.
