The flood situation in the Golaghat district of Assam has deteriorated due to the overflowing Dhansiri River, which has submerged additional areas, particularly affecting the Dusutimukh region of Marangi Mouza. The relentless rise in water levels has reportedly impacted approximately 14,000 families, leading to around 52,000 individuals being adversely affected in the Khumtai Assembly constituency. The local populace is struggling as floodwaters invade residential properties.

District authorities have set up 32 relief camps to accommodate around 1,300 individuals who have been displaced. However, many residents from surrounding villages continue to express anxiety as water intrusion increases, with several households opting to remain in upper sections of their homes to safeguard belongings and livestock like cows and goats.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

In response to the ongoing crisis, relief camps have been established by the district administration to assist those affected by the floods. This initiative aims to provide shelter and essential amenities to the displaced. MLA Mrinal Saikia has noted that the situation has remained critical for the past four to five days, as water levels in the Dhansiri River continue to increase, subsequently displacing many villagers.

Mrinal Saikia detailed that a significant number of individuals, exceeding a thousand, have lost their homes and are currently residing in these camps. Some families remain in their houses, clinging to their possessions and livestock. This predicament complicates the overall response to the floods and highlights the difficulties faced by residents during this trying time.

The ongoing floods have also adversely affected essential infrastructure in the region, disrupting access to facilities such as St. Mary’s School, further complicating the situation for students and families alike. Authorities are diligently monitoring the situation as the water level rise continues to present challenges for rescue efforts.

As the flooding intensifies, many residents find themselves trapped in their villages, including those in Kadamguri and Rangdoi. The need for effective rescue operations has become increasingly urgent, as both affected individuals and authorities strive to address the repercussions of the inundation.
