“Hold Weddings at Statue of Unity, ‘Sardar Sahab’ Will Bless”: PM Modi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged Indian citizens to reconsider their preference for destination weddings abroad and instead hold their ceremonies at the Statue of Unity. He expressed concerns regarding the expenditure of foreign currency, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions in West Asia.

During an address on May 11, 2023, in Vadodara, Modi noted that many families have been opting for overseas weddings, which he believes place a financial strain on both individuals and the nation. He remarked that previously he received multiple wedding invitations, but this practice has dwindled as couples choose foreign locales.

Modi urged citizens to view the Statue of Unity as a prestigious wedding venue, highlighting the spiritual significance it holds. He stated that weddings in this location would enable couples to receive “blessings” from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister.

Heritage and Cultural Value in Celebrations

The Prime Minister emphasised the necessity of instilling pride in India’s rich heritage among the younger generation. He questioned the common belief that prestige must stem from foreign locations and highlighted the beauty and significance of India as a wedding destination.

“Ask yourselves: Are there no places within India where we can spend our vacations and teach our children about our history?” Modi stated, urging families to consider local sites over foreign venues. His assertion aligns with his vision for fostering national pride through domestic celebrations and holidays.

Modi’s assertions reflect a broader initiative to promote tourism and heritage appreciation, positioning the Statue of Unity as not just a monument but an integral part of India’s cultural landscape for future generations.

Addressing Economic Challenges Linked to Global Conflicts

The Prime Minister addressed the economic impact of geopolitical tensions in West Asia, describing the situation as “one of the major crises of this decade.” He urged citizens to collectively mitigate the economic burden resulting from excessive imports, particularly from conflict zones.

According to Modi, India spends a substantial amount of foreign currency on imported goods, which has escalated in costs due to global supply chain disruptions. He called for citizens to adopt measures that would reduce dependence on foreign products, citing small efforts as pivotal in alleviating the country’s resource strain.

Modi reiterated the importance of adopting practical changes in daily behaviours, such as utilising public transport and minimising consumption of petrol and diesel. He highlighted that changes in individual habits could significantly contribute to national economic stability.

Reflecting on recent global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Modi conveyed optimism that the nation would collaboratively overcome current hardships as well. He pointed out that India has demonstrated resilience in facing past crises and can do so again.

The Prime Minister’s appeal comes in light of a regional crisis believed to have implications for global energy supply. He concluded with a call for citizens to make informed and responsible choices in their personal and communal lives, reinforcing the idea that collective action is critical in difficult times.
