US-Iran Talks Delayed Despite Preparations, Switzerland Remains Ready to Facilitate Dialogue

The CSR Journal Magazine

Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday confirmed that planned talks involving the United States and Iran have been postponed, while stating that it remains prepared to facilitate the negotiations once they are rescheduled.

The development comes as the White House said plans for the next round of technical discussions have not yet been finalised, prompting US Vice President JD Vance to delay his departure for Switzerland.

Switzerland Says Preparatory Work Continues

Responding to an email from ANI, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said discussions involving the United States, Iran, Qatar and Pakistan had been postponed.

“The planned talks between the US, Iran, Qatar and Pakistan have been postponed. Switzerland remains ready to facilitate these talks. The relevant preparatory work at Burgenstock is continuing. No further information can be provided at present,” the ministry said.

The statement indicated that logistical preparations at the Burgenstock venue are continuing despite the delay.

White House Says Timetable Yet to Be Finalised

A White House spokesperson said the US delegation was prepared to leave at short notice once the negotiations are formally scheduled.

“As the Vice President said at his press conference, the plans for the upcoming technical talks have not been finalised, and the US delegation has been prepared to depart at the first available opportunity. But the logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable,” the spokesperson said.

“As of now, the Vice President is not departing tonight. We will let you know as soon as we have a concrete update about next steps. We look forward to beginning technical talks as soon as possible,” the spokesperson added.

Earlier in the day, Vance had indicated that the timing of the talks remained uncertain and that the United States was ready to proceed when arrangements were completed.

Vance Highlights Impact of Peace Agreement

Speaking at a press briefing, the Vice President said the agreement reached between the United States and Iran was already producing economic benefits.

According to Vance, 12.5 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz after the two countries signed a peace plan aimed at ending the conflict.

“The president’s peace plan in Iran is already bearing real fruits for the American people. Last night, 12.5 million barrels of oil went through the Strait of Hormuz. That is a high since the beginning of the conflict. Oil prices are down nearly at their level from the pre-war conflict. Gas prices dropped below $4 a gallon today for the first time since the conflict. And importantly, they’re going to keep falling further given how low oil prices are,” he said.

Tensions Persist in the Region

Meanwhile, i24 News reported that the Israel Defense Forces carried out strikes against Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure in Lebanon after rockets and explosive drones were launched at Israeli forces.

The reported strikes underscored the continuing instability in the region even as diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict between Washington and Tehran remain underway.

While the postponement of the talks has delayed the next stage of negotiations, Switzerland reiterated its willingness to continue facilitating the process whenever the parties are ready to resume discussions.
